How many porn stars or strippers have short hair?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

see, when i think of "female solipsism", wereallthroway's comment is what i have in mind. an entire paragraph about female appearance, written solely with regard to what women want, like , think or feel, without regards to the fact that a BIG part of MOST womens lives is wanting to be attractive to MEN, and completely ignoring the wholly opposite male opinion on the matter. basically, forming ones opinions on appearance as if men dont exist

[–]SoftHarem 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Textbook example. Also, just look how short sighted she is.

"Oh don't worry, it will grow back."

"Oh don't worry, you can fuck all those hot dudes in your 20s. You have your whole life to find a husband."

etc. etc.

Instant gratification without a worry in the world for long term happiness. This is exactly why our communities exist.

TL;DR - Keep your hair long and your legs closed.

Lesbians know more than most that butch is not attractive.

I don't really think that feminists are telling everyone that they should cut their hair. Remember one of the main tenets of feminism is that women should have consequence free choices. In reality what feminists are telling people is that they should be able to cut their hair, without there being any consequences. The implicit statement here is that there are consequences for cutting your hair short. Feminists just don't want that to be the case. So, women who cut their hair short are trying to support consequence free hair cutting. Feminism may be encouraging short hair, because that's how you beat the patriarchy, (or something like that), but that not the same as telling women they "should" cut their hair. It's a subtle, but important distinction to make, because if feminism were doing the latter, there would be women uprising saying that they could do whatever they wanted, creating a third-enlightened-wave feminism.

Patriarchy was terminal in the 1970s, had its last gasps in the 1980s and was dead and buried by the 1990s.

E:spelling

[–]FleetingWishEndorsed Contributor 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's no such thing as "patriarchy".

[–]TempestTcup 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was thinking more the traditional meaning of males leading the family and organizations, etc. Even in those terms, it certainly doesn't exist much anymore.

I usually get called ugly and a neckbeard basement dweller that hasn't ever gotten laid when I say I don't dig chicks with short hair.

See.. I know I'm choir preaching, but I don't understand this as ALL. You have a preference. Great! What is so wrong with that?

I tend to like blue eyed guys (BetterHalf/ Micheal Shanks) but hey Johnny Galecki is HOT! There's nothing wrong with finding a certain look attractive. Or a certain feature..

I get weird looks when I tell people I don't like guys over 6 foot. Not alone dude :)

[–]rebuildingMyself 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not that you have a preference, it's that you have a preference that disadvantages them in the sexual marketplace.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, ok. I never gave it that wide a spectrum of thought. I guess that's a side effect of being out of the 'marketplace' for so long.

It was mostly in jest as I mentioned in another post I have an Aunt that's 6 foot tall. I'm only 5'7" so I'm kinda what you would call 'the runt of the litter'. :)

BetterHalf is also 6 foot and I just like how it matches up. My head is right at his shoulder level. All I have to do is get up on my toes and I can give him kiss on the cheek. If he's any taller, I might have to grab a step stool first. ;) But oh boy would he fit right in with the rest of my family.

I think the tallest male in my family is 6'7" shortest is 6'3" I believe.

Ah, those who do not/cannot enjoy the art of hair pulling shouldn't dispense advice.

I have never understood the "rule" that older women need to cut their hair. And really they aren't even that old, it's like as soon as you have a child you are obligated to chop your hair off into the "mom cut". Why?? Long hair is SO much more forgiving than short hair... short hair needs a wash and style pretty much everyday because sleeping on it messes it up so much. If I don't get particularly sweaty I can get away with only washing my hair every 3 days if I want to because I don't get bed head like my husband and his short hair does. Isn't it easier to take 30 mins twice a week instead of 15 every day? I don't understand.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I have never understood the "rule" that older women need to cut their hair.

I never knew about this one. Grammy always kept her long and twists it into this halo updo I love.

I, for one, can't wait get enough silver (or any grey) and look as dignified as this lady It may 'look' short but it's like those old style updo things Dana showed us before. The mom thing I understand if you are nursing but, Madre always grew her's out after and so did I.

[–]sugarcrushEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How nice that your grandma kept her hair long! Both of my grandmothers were part of the "older women must chop their hair off" belief system... and pushed it onto my mom :/ my dad definitely didn't like it and was occasionally vocal about it to all three of them but she never grew her hair out again. I would love if I could keep my hair at least shoulder length as I age and have it generally like this lady. Currently crossing every available appendage that I got enough of my dad's genes that my hair won't turn all wiry when I go gray and I can keep it long...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I like her look too! I wouldn't mind some wiry on my end :) Might actually keep it in place for more than 5 seconds :)

Even Gramma (Father's side) kept her hair long. But, as she was full blooded Native so that might have been a cultural thing, whereas I am almost sure Grammy kept her's long at Grandpa's request (I remember her mentioning it years ago) and loved the result so she keeps it in his honor.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've definitely noticed a huge difference in the way people react to me and the type of men who approach me based on whether I have long or short hair, especially when combined with different clothing or makeup.

It's really interesting to realize that changing your appearance can make such a dramatic difference in the types of opportunities you get, the types of friends you tend to make, and the impression people get when meeting you. I believe it's a smart strategy to cultivate different looks (and ways of behaving) until you find the ones that fit you and tend to attract the kind of people you want to be in your life.

[–]MrsStrom 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think you're looking at the gay men/women/feminist's opinion of short hair in the wrong light.

Who are gay men and straight women attracted to?

Men.

So how are gay men and women going to often prefer women's hair?

Like a man's (short).

Feminists seem to think that you should look however you want (fat, dirty, short hair, whatever.) Because its your choice. What they are failing to realize is that what is attractive to straight men is not what is attractive to gay men, bisexual men, or women. Their solipsistic view of the world has "forgotten" that what they find attractive is not what men find attractive.

So, I wouldn't say that we're being LIED to, just being led around by a blind person while we keep our hands over our eyes.

Bottom line: if you care about being attractive to straight men, keep your hair long. If you don't care, well then go ahead and shave your head Sinead O'connor style.

[–]TempestTcup 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

go ahead and shave your head Sinead O'connor style

It didn't look too bad when she was young and thin (of course, I'm straight and female, so I wasn't looking at her in a sexual way), but holy cow, there is NOTHING attractive about her now.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i just googled pix, im blind now, thanks

[–]MrsStrom 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

of course, I'm straight and female

Exactly. I'm bi, but I prefer men. So for me, I love an attractive woman with short hair. However, straight women looking to marry a man shouldn't be too interested in my personal preference.

[–]inkedpink 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've had both short and long hair over the years myself. To me, short hair was less fuss, I had less hair in the drain and I was lazier with it. My hair was able to be tamed with a bit of product and I was out the door in my uniform. When I have long hair, I have to do the little extra work of sock bun-ing it, but I'm still capable of doing it pretty fast. Time was really negligible.

I usually cut my hair super short whenever something jarring was happening. Military life, break ups, things like that. Growing the hair back would result in growing a different sort of confidence. Not to say I was not confident with pixie hair, I was essentially still the same, just less attractive.

Thinking about it now, I cut my hair to either cleanse the palette or as a determent. So yes I agree. Short hair does change how people look at you/your level of attractiveness/and how you may feel about yourself.

[–]zxcvbnm000 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Just a guy passing through, so I have no qualms if you don't think my opinion is worth a dime.

But I don't mind girls with short hair(definitely chin height, none of that near buzz cut nonsense), since some of them seem to be refined, more mature, and a lot have to compensate for their perceived lack of being feminine by being more girly and/or confident. That being said, you'd have to have some kind of fetish to not want long haired girls at all.

No doubt that most manly men want long haired women. However, it's not the kiss of death to have short hair, but it is by far the exception(unless you like Asian guys, they're more used to it). Since they seem less chased, I don't know how much it is guys settling for less, or it's that they don't only want the often chased easy women.

Some girls can really pull off short hair, others not as much, but there's no one that ONLY looks good with short hair, not that I know of. Go for it if you think you really look good and can get the kind of man you want, but it's always an exception to the rule today and a risk. Maybe there are still a couple of dudes out there that still like the more Marilyn Monroe look.

and NO not even Emma Watson or Natalie Portman look good with super short hair, they only look doable, sometimes not even that. It's definitely not a surefire deal breaker, but there's a difference between that and something 95% of men don't care for. There are still a ton guys that would go out with either one of those two in a heartbeat, but if she ever once asked if she should grow it longer than that for a while, she would hear a "yes" from every one of 'em.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link

Good grief, why make your haircut into a political issue? I've personally only dated a couple of guys who preferred my hair long. A couple liked it better very short, mostly around chin length. Point is, while I think staying in shape and taking care of your appearance is important, I wasn't willing to shape my entire look and have a haircut that I hate just to attract a man who will expect me to keep that haircut I hate forever. To me this is along the lines of not getting tattoos because so many men don't like them on women. I'm all for looking nice for my man, but I don't want a man who is only attracted to a woman who looks like... well, a way I really don't want to look.

Edit: I'm aware that the majority of men do prefer long hair and women who cut it short can't expect to have the same options as if they kept it long. I just didn't worry too terribly much about it because I wouldn't want to be with a man who wanted my hair really long (it looks like total crap that way and would work solely for the novelty).

[–]FleetingWishEndorsed Contributor 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe you, Natalie Portman, and Emma Watson are lucky enough to look pretty good with short hair, but a lot of women (including myself) aren't so lucky. Chopped hair is the difference between me being a 5 and an 7.5. A lot of women are kidding themselves if they think that short hair is "good enough", when it in reality it lowers their attractiveness quite a bit.

Honestly, you could make the same argument about being fat.

I'm aware that the majority of men do prefer long hair thin women and women who cut it short weigh too much can't expect to have the same options as if they kept it long were thin. I just didn't worry too terribly much about it because I wouldn't want to be with a man who wanted my hair really long cared about my weight.

The point isn't to discard men outright because they're "shallow" and care about long hair/ thin women, it's to care about what men want. The reality is men's desires in women are no more shallow than our desires in men, and if you expect the man your with to be the things that attract you (whatever those things may be), why can't he want you to be the the things that are attractive him?

Honestly, I think discarding someone from your dating pool for reasons such as "they don't like short hair" or "they don't like 200lb women" is petty and could take out a lot of quality men, because men who are high status, have high standards.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, no, no, I didn't mean that I would find them shallow. Everyone has preferences. But I like to look a certain way and would prefer to find a man who likes that look so that I don't have to dress in a way that doesn't feel like "me." I would really resent it if I married a man who told me not to get any more tattoos or keep a natural hair color. I am lucky in that I am above average-looking (though I wouldn't put myself in Natalie Portman's category), so maybe it would be different if that weren't the case.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get what you're saying. It's very important to me not to be thin (really, I hate the look of myself when I have skinny legs), and yes, it will probably lower my attractiveness to many men to have big legs. But luckily, I got a guy who likes big legs more than thin legs, so it all works out :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I always thought the hair length was about face shape. For instance some girls are petite, small boned and it looks totally cute on them. I .. can never swing short haired just based on that alone ;)

Thing is with long hair and stronger bone structures (Native/Scot in my case) is that unless you have those AWESOME curls (yeah, curly heads I'm calling you out again ;) Smell my jealousy!) or layers cut in, I find it doesn't frame the face as much as accentuate the 'sharp angles' of the face. Like flat and weighed down. So my hair is just past shoulder blades but with a ton of layers. Anything longer just brings out the native straight and anything shorter is.. shudders Baaaaad.

I have to agree on the tattoo thing. I didn't get mine until after I was with BetterHalf. As he is my best friend he understood the depth of its meaning, offered feedback on it's placement and LOVES it. I presented him with the drawings and concepts of the couple others I would like and actually blushed (mwahahaaha!! Mine is an evil laugh!!) when I handed him the concept art of the one I wanted to get for him on my leg.

It really just depends on the person and the relationship.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it depends on hair type. I was a hair stylist and women would come in with long, stringy, flat and frizzy hair that their husbands wouldn't let them cut. I always thought, what's the point of having all that hair if it looks like absolute shit?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It didn't look like shit to their husbands and that's what counts.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If they're willing to have gross looking hair for their husbands then I certainly solute them. I just couldn't do it. I would go crazy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well what about giving them advice on product to maintain or increase the health or improve the texture of the hair?

Maybe the husbands would appreciate such efforts as well?

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I always do/did (can't do hair anymore because if injuries), but at a certain point there really isn't anything you can do. I personally am not a fan of hair that just lays flat, which is why I hate mine long, but I can understand men liking it. I always thought it was sweet when women would come in talking about how they hated their hair long, but they kept it that way for their husbands. My coworkers always talked about how terrible their husbands must be, but I really doubt any of their husbands would beat them over it or something. It's just a way to show you care. But, that's why I found a man who likes me to change it a lot. I'm devoted and will do a lot for my husband, but I couldn't keep the same hairstyle. Haha.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So many times you'll see women right after marriage cut their hair short. Makes no sense.

[–]TempestTcup 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's because they don't have to try any more; they can now cut their hair, get fat and leave the house a mess. And bonus, no more blowjobs!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

they can now cut their hair, get fat and leave the house a mess. And bonus, no more blowjobs!

I think you just accurately described hell. Especially that last part. shudders

Fun fact: My aunt is 6 feet tall and it took two people to hold up her hair as we buttoned her into her wedding dress.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was so afraid of people seeing me cutting my hair after our wedding as a sign of disrespect to my husband. In reality we both wanted it cut, but that was the worst part to me. I would never want to give the impression of not respecting my husband, and when you cut your hair after the wedding it does sort of seem that way. But, contrary to what Tempest said below, blow jobs are much easier now! ;-P

[–]Tastysalad101 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This gonna sound kinda shallow but if a girl has short hair i see her a lot less attractive.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you arent in a place where the women think men's stated desires, wants and needs are shallow or defective.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

See... this.. NO! BAD lol STOP ;) I'm being totally gently teasing here. But this is something I had to push past in terms of conditioning from the so called 'total acceptance' society outlook.

I settled in relationships before based on the fact I thought if I took physical attraction into consideration I was being shallow. You aren't! There is nothing wrong is finding a certain physical traits attractive. You aren't shallow or anything. It's your preference and there's nothing wrong with that. :)

[–]valkyrieone 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I have cut my hair twice in the last six years to be short. The first was a huge mistake, completely impulsive, and my hair dresser didn't have the balls to tell me I couldn't/shouldn't go that route because my hair is too thick. I regretted it and literally cried for the next week because my hair was gone and I had no idea how to work with it. I was so close to buying a wig I hated it so much. Three years later I cut my hair just to my shoulders to donate to Locks of Love. Fortunately my hair grows particularly fast but I love my hair. It is something I cherish and pride myself in with having a great head of hair. Never again though will I ever let my length get any where near the top of my shoulders. For days after a hair cut, even if it's just a trim, I can still sense the "ghost hair". some girls can pull it off (short hair) I still don't find it 100%flattering on any of them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People, both men and women, should always use the advantage they have in life. Sometimes you are at a disadvantage. It may be easier to be a white person instead of a black. It may be easier to be born rich than poor. But if you have the advantage, the optimal strategy is to use it. People generally have a poor sense of odds and probability and they don't understand how important it is to have a slight edge. That is why so many people go to the casino. The 49/51 odds don't sound too terrible, but why do so many people leave with their pockets empty? It is the compounding effects from repeating.

People simply don't understand that tiny advantage. If you are slightly more attractive, you might make one or two more friends than the average person. Then you tap into this friend's social network. Now you are exposed to a lot more people, and within this group you use your advantage again. This is why attractive people have far more friends, far higher quality social contacts, better jobs, more money, etc. It all comes down to that tiny advantage compounding over time. Some of the richest people in the world only beat the stock market by 1-2% a year. If you can get a tiny bit more out of every social interaction, then after a few years, you will be socially "rich".

People seem to understand this effect when they do job interviews. For most jobs, your skill matters infinitely more than what you wear, but you put on those nice clothes anyways. It's not just a guy/girl thing, it applies to both sexes. However, for some reason they think it doesn't apply in the rest of life.

Some advantages are not easily to obtain. You can have a really nice body, but you have to hit the gym several times a week and put in the effort. Having long hair is one of the easiest advantages you can have. It is ridiculous to turn it into a disadvantage. The first peacock that had shiny feathers ended up spreading his genes to the entire population. Think of how much worse a young guy looks if they shaved the top of their head so they have the "going bald" / super receding hair look. It is certainly a big disadvantage.

[–]wereallthrowaway 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Pam Anderson isn't an old woman but, she is not in the same age group as Miley Cyrus or Jennifer Lawrence(40s v 20s) so i'm not sure why she isn't allowed to change things up after looking the same for decades. Society tells older women that having long hair makes them look silly. Sometimes never changing can also age a person. Some people have trouble maintaining long hair because of time constraints and hair quality etc. Hair is for your enjoyment and if you can't cut it once when your young and then let it grow back out, what does that say about how important impressing others constantly is? Hair grows back.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Society tells older women that having long hair makes them look silly.

society=other women then. no man has ever told any woman long hair made her look silly at any age. maybe wearing it in long youthful styles looks inappropriate, married and older women traditionally wore their hair up in buns etc.

society consists of women and men, young and old?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who tells older women they look silly with long hair? Men? Children?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

shes perfectly allowed to, she just removed what was left of her miniscule remaining hotness to men by doing it

i think you missed what the article was saying.

[–]TempestTcup 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i'm not sure why she isn't allowed to change things up after looking the same for decades.

She's absolutely allowed; look, she did it! Tada!

The problem is that it looks like crap. She did not age well at all, but most of that was from so much plastic surgery and tons of drugs. Rode hard and put up wet! Live for the moment and never plan for the future.

i think its hot, she doesn't look like she in an 80's hair metal music video anymore.

Hair grows back

Speaking from personal experience, yes hair will grow back but mostly it will not grow back like it did when you were younger. I cut mine shoulder length in my mid 20s and have been struggling ever since to grow it back because it is much thinner now and very curly after having had children. Hair changes with age no matter how careful you are with your diet and health in general. Look it up, the facts are all there.

Society tells older women that having long hair makes them look silly

First of all who cares what society dictates and secondly wtf? Ask any "real" man what they think looks better(short or long hair) on a woman of any age.

so i'm not sure why she isn't allowed to change things up

Who said anything about permission? She just doesn't look as attractive as she did with the long hair; that's the point of the article! Cut your hair, you go girl, just don't come back crying about how men don't look at you the same way anymore.

this is the most consistent problem i have when speaking to most women that for some reason rarely comes up with RP women. the notion that criticism or disagreement is "not allowing" the person being criticized to do something. ive never fully understood it

This I believe is the result of the feminist bullshit brainwashing tactics shining through our poor unsuspecting youths. I can't even be angry at them for spouting this crap out at us because they really don't know any better. Who's teaching them the difference? school, media, absentee parents? Hell, I'm having trouble with my daughters sometimes because they get these ridiculous ideas bombarded at them off the internet everywhere they go. There just isn't enough of us speaking out against this nonsense to counteract the brainwashing.

'struth, good luck with your daughters in this culture, must be a daunting task

I feel so hopeless and helpless at times. I feel worse for my sons though; I know my girls will do well regardless of what world view they embrace but my boys don't have that luxury. My heart breaks every time I think of what their future may hold for them.

I guess by "real" you mean penis? My guy likes short hair. I don't even have short hair, He likes it.

By "real" man I mean a man that will speak his own mind regardless of what we think, not the drooling sycophants that will tell you whatever you want to hear to get on your side.

As you get older, the long hair will hide a lot of the slackness of the jawline and neck that will happen. That's a main reason older women shouldn't cut their hair and why cutting it will really damage their looks.

I don't think that when guys say they want hair long, they don't necessarily mean down to the butt, but even shoulder length is attractive and feminine and hides most of the aging neck and jawline.

Fucking baby Boomer women in my neighborhood all look like steamed dumplings with men's wigs on. Drives me crazy, they look 20 years older than their husbands

I have neighbors that are both as big around as they are tall (about 4 feet each way) with identical haircuts and I cannot tell them apart unless they speak.

I have the utmost respect for your ability to not vocalize all the "Tweedledum and Tweedledee" references that are playing in my head, thanks to your hilarious visual :)

Those are exactly the pet names we have for them :)

yeah!

I recently cut my hair about chin-length and have been told by lots of people (both guys and girls) that they "typically don't like that look on people, but somehow you can really pull it off." I'm not sure if this is really just a backhanded compliment and my friends are just trying tell me what I want to hear... now I'm second-guessing it even more. Is that like a friendly way of saying "That haircut sucks, but it just sucks less on you?"

[–]bgny 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes.

They might genuinely think it's cute, but then again sometimes when I am shocked by something ghastly and am not quick enough to not show my surprise, I will compliment whatever it is so that I don't hurt their feelings. Not that they are doing this to you, but I find myself doing it to others.

All my life my mom and grandma (dad's mom) have wanted to cut my hair short. If they had it their way I would have gone all through grade school with a boy's haircut. They despise long hair. I think it has to do with practicality not aesthetics or feminism.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

to an extent, but its a practicality born of refusing to recognize the importance of hair (appearance)in attracting men

[–]drop_commentator 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In a really bizarre reversal of this, one time I convinced my mom to chop all her hair off because it was 'chic' and 'fashionable' (this was not during my feminist phase). I still feel kind of guilty about it, she didn't look very good. On the bright side, I now know better than to ever tell an older woman to cut her hair off.
