If you celebrate Christmas Eve, have some activities for the family while waiting for midnight! I got Bon Bons and plastic Christmas balls that people can paint while we chatter, eat and listen to Bing Crosby. :)

Things I learned this Christmas:

Glitter NEVER comes out of the grooves of your kitchen table.

Never stir homemade caramel with a plastic handled spatula even if the spatula part is silicone.

Teaching the kids to make cookies then handing them out to friends and neighbors is wonderful.

It is entirely possible to make a batch of cookies without a blender!

It's Christmas. No matter what the house looks like, or how crazy things are, it's Christmas. "It's wonderful" doesn't begin to describe it.

We had a gorgeous day with both sides of the family.

I spent Christmas Eve with N's mum prepping all the food and had a lot of fun with her. She's eccentric and kind and funny and I feel like we really bonded over turkey stress.

We had breakfast on the beach with family and friends. We all brought a couple of 'Christmas Orphans' along - people who had no family to celebrate with - and it was just so much fun. Lots of food, champagne, music and ball sports.

Lunch was back at N's family home. It was really nice to have both sides of the family together. It was long and lazy and so much fun.

I bought N a very specific tool that he has been looking for, and did a lot of research to get the absolute best one. He was so, so happy with it and that just made my day :)

This is our first Christmas in what's probably our forever home! Yay! So it's been interesting starting to decorate/create traditions together.

D expressed an opinion about Christmas decor (which I thought he hardly noticed), namely that he doesn't like the wintery theme (as we're in Australia). Entirely reasonable point! Since then, I've gone out and collected some Australian foliage, and I've been pinning like crazy with ideas for next year (as it's a little late to start lots of them now).

I've also been looking for a good Nativity scene, as I've been nesting! Currently the frontrunners are this one by Willow Tree which is beautiful & subtle, but perhaps a little overdone - those figurines are in a lot of houses I see, and I think they're a bit silly if they're not meaningful. However, my mother has asked if I want our heirloom nativity set, and I think I'll take her up on it. I loved it as a child, and it's timeless and hard-wearing (I remember knocking the feet off the sheep when I was young...) and will fit in with my general style.

I've just learned that we are having unexpected (but very very welcome) guests for Christmas dinner. Now I'm not sure what to make. We have a big dinner party planned for Christmas Eve with lots of heavy food. I'd planned to make Christmas dinner very light, but does anyone have any ideas on how to still make it feel festive and special? So that our guests don't feel like they missed out on our main event? My husband doesn't really like seafood, otherwise I'd have gone with that...

Holidays are the best time of year to become a better woman. It’s like domestic red pill boot camp! All the things I’ve worked at all year (cooking, cleaning, beauty, time management and disposition) are harder to practice through the year. It seems impractical to do all these trial run skill sets without a direct need, and it wasn’t apparent how much progress I had/hadn’t made either.

And then, December struck. We have four events down, seven to go. Here is what I have learned!

Cooking a million things for various events within the span of a week makes you adept with cooking times, ingredient lists and maintenance cleaning.
Staying in touch with people to ensure events are planned, expectations are clear, and every contribution is prepped and organized well in advance is helpful. Seeing each party as an encapsulated event helps me better visualize planning normal days for max enjoyment and minimal producing (he doesn’t like when I “make things into a production.”)
Planning, purchasing and presenting couple group gifts are the perfect chance to make sure your new heart rate and blood pressure monitors are working ;) It’s also a perfect chance to shut up and get out of your man’s way, and represent him positively!
Often it’s easy to see what you do not want to do. Seeing relatives and friends handling things in ways that aren’t aspirational is rather motivating. For some reason (probably influenced by self centeredness, self deception, poor communication, laziness, poor personal leadership, etc) people get so 👏🏼 wound 👏🏼 up 👏🏼 and it’s just not the look oh, at all. Seriously, remember the reason for the season. No one cares if you forgot a gift for so and so, didn’t spend enough on xyz. It doesn’t matter who gets credit for what. Furthermore, you are not the most important person in the room, everyone is a main character in their own story. Just be warm and handle everything like you’re still convincing your man that you are marriage material. Cry on the inside like a winner and be flexible :) And enjoy it! It is the most wonderful time of the year! As long as you keep your head on straight ;)

Long-time lurker as I haven't had anything to contribute, but I would love to share that this holiday season has been absolutely lovely from a RPW standpoint! I am in a management position in my job and there have been some incredibly unique situations that have required me to be absent from my marriage for the last three months. I worked 85 out of the last 90 days, all 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week, but made it through and now am enjoying 10 days off! It has been an absolute pleasure to get re-aquainted with my husband on his days off, and I've been happily playing wifey now that he's back to work and I'm off. Deep-cleaned the home, dinner on the table every night, etc.

Two days to go until all our festivities occur. My house is getting a deep scrub today. So grateful for my steam cleaner. Also making candies for party favors/gifts. Peanut butter cups, my husbands favorite, and some saltine toffee as an experiment. Any other ladies running around like a chicken but loving every minute? Deep cleaning today so I can relax with the fam tomorrow. Tomorrow is "kids day" at our house. I do a fun breakfast then we play board games and watch Christmas movies, go for a drive to look at lights and basically just hang with my men. Its like a tune in before the full on hustle of Christmas eve.

He said he was proud of himself and I made sure to tell him how much I loved the presents. He loved the hat I made him.
