I suggest forming an alliance of mutual awesomeness.

The more confident a person, the greater chance they will make decisions using logic as opposed to emotion. When I was in the military, I was a bit of a trouble maker but smart enough not to get caught. The insecure Sgts would attempt to pull rank, I would play stupid, and I knew how far I could mouth the Sgt off before it was insubordination. My favorite trick was intentionally fucking things up infront of an officer so the Sgt would look bad.

The smart Sgts would clue in quickly what was happening. They would tell me to step inside thier office and tell me to grab a seat. Then they would say lets cut the shit, we both know you are a smart guy. He would agree he wouldn't ride my ass, I would agree not to be a smart ass.

Usually the Sgt then put me to work misappropriating supplies for our platoon, or fudging paperwork to explain how we lost our equipment.

When confronted by someone more Alpha than you are, the respectfully masculine thing to do is to defer to their leadership and be supportive of it . . . until they fuck up. There is no dishonor in following a competent Alpha leader, and if he's better than you, then trying to pretend he's not is going to reflect poorly on you and diminish your own respect.

Knowing how to follow competently is an important Alpha characteristic.

If someone is clearly above you in the hierarchy you shouldn't give them a reason to shit on you. That doesn't mean that you should act submissive though. Especially in professional settings alpha traits can be taken as a sign of good leadership qualities when you're looking to be promoted.

Do not try to depose an established leader. Not that it can't be done, but the failure will have huge consequences.
You want to be alpha prime of the group, win their respect and befriend the alpha. Work your way up within the ranks or make a truce with the alpha so he accepts you to be on his level.

Would not advise trying to out alpha him.
If this is a teacher of principal ish figure, play beta and get what you want. Don't fuck with authority from a position of weakness.

Alpha isn't just about being the leader of the pack. It's having confidence and self-esteem. Sure you're going to be in situations where someone else is in a position of authority over you (like your boss), but that doesn't mean you should be submissive to that person.

If you have something to say, you have to make it heard, and you can't do that if you're being submissive. When talking to your boss, you should always propose new stuff and ideas and be in front of the discussion. If you think your boss has a bad idea, you need to let them know your point of view, and you can't do that if you're being submissive.

If you want a good raise, you can't be submissive and just do what you're told. You need to be assertive and have initiative. And it's something you need to do year-round, because your employer will remember you being submissive and give you a minimal raise knowing you aren't really going to argue with him or her. You can't fake being assertive if deep down you're submissive, as you can't fake being submissive if deep down you're assertive. It's a way of living that has to be lived all the time, for any situation.

Also, it doesn't always mean that the person with a higher position of authority is "better" than you. It only says he might have had more education, a different education or just worked there for a longer time (and trust me being a boss because you worked a shitty job for your whole life does not make you better than the kid with his first job that has potential and drive to be something better when he grows up). It says nothing about the rest of his life compared to yours, nor does it say anything about intelligence or strength or whatever you think is "better" in a person.

P.S.: There is /r/asktrp for these kind of questions as was said by mods in a recent post.

Meeting alphas is tremendously rewarding offer them value (be their running buddy/introduce them to friends etc) and they will reward you with opportunities. The group will decide who leads, and theres no reason to force a change. Contribute to the group's goals and atep in when needed.

[–]widec0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, if they're clearly more competent I let them take the leadership position. I always try to put myself in the leadership position, but there's no point of clashing against someone better just to fill your own ego.

It's technically beta in terms of group dynamics sure, but that doesn't mean it's wrong or should be frowned upon. A solid small group will work together under one persons direction. Use it as a good learning experience for yourself.

Depends. If there's no way to AMOG or if he's a good alpha for the group (or just a good alpha in general), you can follow but WITHOUT being sycophantic. I he's a big-ego'd douche either AMOG him or go your own way; just do your own fucking thing. I'm a sarcastic person, so if someone says something stupid, I'll usually let off a little zinger or give them a raised eyebrow. You can do this with the alpha IF it fits with who you are; kind of says "I'll follow you, but don't expect me to kiss your ass. If shit goes south I'm primed to take the helm."

Self-esteem. Get some.

You'll never improve your self-worth thinking like this.

[–]Dreadnark1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This. You should never feel beneath ANYONE. Putting other men on a pedestal is just as bad as doing the same with women.

[–]BrunoOh0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. You just have to do it in other ways. Be assertive but not disrespectful. Let your superior know (and show proof) that B is better than A, if a problem occurs you tell them as fast as possible so it can still be dealt with. Basically, give them reason to trust you.

What a beta would do it: always say yes to a boss no matter what, puppet whatever they do without thinking, hide problems to make himself look good.

Alpha begins inside yourself.

You don't actually "rise" in a beta-to-beta conflict.

You need to view other people as potential members of your "Wolf Pack".

Women tend to view each other as competition. Don't be like "catty" women.
