Say the woman was a small framed off duty police officer with a weapon. Then she would have been the most practical person to step up.

Yeah that's a gender role. I'd take it a step further and say the majority of men would be pretty pissed if their wife/so tried to beat them to that confrontation. I know I'd never hear the end of it.

I would change your scenario to something more realistic, like say a medium sized vicious dog that can be subdued and killed.

The man and the woman are definitely stronger than the animal, yet 9 times out of ten the woman will force the man to put himself in harms way to alleviate the threat.

She COULD have taken out the dog, but she won't.

You are specifically referencing "physical strength", I'm lump size in there too, as the reason the male is stepping forward to defend the household. Personally I would not relate that to a gender role. Gender roles, as I understand them, are roles assumed based on Gender, not characteristics or aptitudes one gender usually has.

Choosing to do something because you may be better or more effective at it is different than being pushed into it due to your gender.

I agree with your hypothesis, there's no male/female relationship that can be entirely devoid of gender roles. It's possible to minimise the obvious ones with effort (whether this is a good idea is another matter), but ultimately you can't escape the biological and sociological fact that men and women are different and are treated differently in society.

Men are expected to step up in that case, and biologically they are stronger and "designed" (for want of a better word) to be more violent due to testosterone and shit.

And I'm not 'Murican so I don't have guns everywhere but I keep a knife by my bed just in case. Never know what shit will go down was chatting to a mate just last weekend who said on his street someone he knew had his throat slashed over some beef with his brother that had nothing to do with him. Man's gotta watch out for yourself is all I'm saying.

A lot of things that made the man's behavior attractive to begin with has to do with gender roles. Also yes, your scenario is an example of a gender role thing.

I think those ‘gender roles’ are predetermined in a very large way, in fact almost exclusively, by biological factors and are in fact ‘sex roles’ that reflect the different functions male and female primates perform in the primate social hierarchy.
