What a treat we have for you this week.

The mods as part of general sub improvements have been working on improving the site’s “Terms and Acronyms” page. The old one did sterling work, but it’s a bit old, a bit out of date, and a bit bare bones.

Several users, notably /u/anarchkitty and /u/concacanca, thought it’d be good to have better definition of the RP Terms such that we had an agreement point concerning what we were debating. A point you can reference as a fairly standard "this is what I mean" Schelling Point.

This is not to say we’re defining this as the “The One True Definition” of any PPD related term. Only that as with other schelling points, it’s a reasonable point where we can gather and get some common reference. We can refer new users struggling with concepts there. We can also use link terms in a thread as “Look, can we discuss THIS and not your bizarro world theory of what this term means, please”.

This is more difficult than you might imagine. Because we also wanted to be sure that various viewpoints from both Red and Blue sides got represented in these definitions even though they are generally “Red” terms.

This is where YOU come in (Yes, YOU behind the bike sheds! Stand still Laddie!)

Each term has been defined initially in a reasonable neutral way.

Following this we are offering space where a partisan/biased "RP View” of the term and a partisan/biased “BP View” of the term can be entered. Snark and Humour are allowed, even encouraged, in the BP views sections.

Finally, we can also add links to a reference thread that gives a good broad understanding of the term.

We need you to help us fill this in. Particularly the BP views of the terms. If you don't fill them, there won't be a BP view, and RP will therefore automatically win the day!

We’re inviting comments in this thread offering us text for any part of the Terms and Acronyms, even additional terms. But we’d really like to fill in these RP and BP views, as well as any great threads discussing the term you remember (even if they are your own).

I’ll then take any that seem reasonable, and with the lightest possible editing, add them to the wiki. You will then have your thoughts enshrined in a small corner of the internet for evermore.

Although we want your contributions we’d also like to make clear that, as mods, we reserve the right to decide what gets into the wiki.

So, if you want to add anything please give us in the comments:

  • The term where you’d like it added/You'd like to add
  • The section (General Definition, BP View, RP view, Link)
  • The text/link you’d like us to add in
