In “The art of the good life”, accomplished author Rolf Dobelli has one tool in his toolkit to a good life, that is, avoiding ideologies.

A red flag that you are dealing with an ideology is that you aren’t using your own words to describe complicated things. You use dogmatic lingo: “patriarchy” “feminine imperative” “toxic masculinity” “AWALT” “micro-aggressions” etc.

TRP has a sidebar with a glossary. Red flag. Feminism has its own language too.

Another red flag is that the theory seems to explain too much. Life is too complicated for things to fit neatly into ideologies. When dealing with social studies, you need to account for interactions between effects of effects of effects.

You cannot think that deeply about social issues in your spare time. Try to explain how a toilet, a battery, or a zipper works. Could you draw it for a 5 year old and explain every detail of how it works? Probably not. This things are infinitely less complicated than social issues. A very humbling thought.

He also mentions avoiding what he calls an “opinion volcano” (something we here are also guilty of). He advises that you should be so sparing with you opinions that you should imagine you were invited on live TV to defend your opinion, with five people who had the opposite opinion. When you feel you could argue their points as eloquently as them, you have earned your opinion.
