Friends is a great example of archetypes. ROSS is a REAL true beta, not an omega like TRP pretends betas are. he has no trouble GETTING women and he can even stand up for himself, but he also gets oneitis for one woman (rachel) that causes him to beta out completely and is a little too supplicating in his relationships until one of his real boundaries is crossed in which case there are some things up which he will not put. ross is pure HUSBAND

joey is alpha. pure lover" without a husbandly attribute (til they ruin him later in the show) and CHANDLER is omega. monica is the Platonic form of an alpha widow (richard) who BBs up chandler, rolls her eyes, dominates him, doesn trespect him and pushes him around while he "yes dears" her. phoebe is a manic pixy dream girl and rachel is the queen of normie ESFJ beckies. its all in there

OKAY OMG

everyone should watch "The One where Ross and Rachel take a Break" which is Season 3, Episode 15. Ross tries to mate guard Rachel and fucking fails. She shit tests him (EDIT: because of discussion with /u/Atlas_B_Shruggin ) by suggesting they go on a "break". He then runs and fucks another girl. Rachel forgives him (cuz she realized omg I broke up with my bf, retarded) and then finds out he fucked another girl. They end things officially.

(being on a break IS A BREAK UP)

Turns out, the guy who he thought wanted Rachel was actually into Rachel and really wanted to fuck her. She possibly knew this but the truth is, men mateguard their women from other men because men see these things. Women don't.

Anyway, points learned from that whole story arc:

Don't have oneitis. It's toxic.
Know when your gf is giving you a shit test. Maintain frame.
Mateguarding is a male expression of love. Don't shame/attack him for it.
If your gf says you're now on a break, take that for what it is, and next the bitch.

Ross is a pussy. He's a whiner and complainer. His manner of speech, his vocal timbre, is literally a sing songy whine. He's a dork. He even has a dork STEM profession (paleontology). He's snarky, bitchy, unassertive, and clumsy.

And yet, he doesn't seem socially awkward. He has a group of great friends who accept and love him. He's the only one of the six who has been married at the start of the series and through its beginnings (albeit to a woman who leaves him... for another woman).

Notwithstanding that setback, he manages more sexual success than Chandler. He dates and has sex with several attractive women- including the hottest Friend (Rachel), an Asian chick, and some delivery woman somewhere. He gets dates with attractive women now and then (see the hilarious episode where he wears the leather pants and is sweating profusely).

He also manages a ONS with a cutie while he and Rachel were, famously, "on a break! He then manages to marry the Brit chick who leaves him because he says "take thee Rachel" during the ceremony. He then gets back together with and marries Rachel at the end of the series following a beta-tastic display at the airport.

the clear message: You can be a whiny beta pussy, have lots of sex with cute girls, and get two passably attractive and one very attractive woman to marry you. That looks pretty role-model like to me.

Ross is an upper beta, career focused, never gets past his oneitis, tries to be nice to women and never mean, is a good boy overall, well groomed, not fat, happy being a scientist.

Men like him keep Civilization going. He's the general role model for men in the show.

It's very difficult for me to take these shows seriously. I like Seinfeld, but George is portrayed as a total loser, Jason Alexander, despite being a brilliant actor, is obviously not physically attractive, yet he has a string of hot girlfriends. I suppose Friends was intended to be a bit more socially realistic, but I can't see how any of them would even survive in New York.

I wish I could act like a complete prick and have Jennifer Aniston and Helen Baxendale competing for my attention, it would be an improvement on my life so far.

Also, I nearly forgot, the group is a rubbish representation of wider society because everyone was good looking. They basically mocked that guy in the coffee shop and the naked couple for not being good looking, and we were supposed to find this endearing.

Ross is an obnoxious loser that slowly and surely becomes increasingly bitter as the series goes on. He fails everywhere in his personal life, and becomes so angry that it affects his professional career. He has eternal oneitis for Rachel. He is a perpetual joke, and in the real world, Rachel would never in a million years hook up with him repeatedly.
