Sometimes people will dramatize a past experience to illicit sympathy from others. Women may be more likely to do this because there is more social capital in victimhood for them.

I have never seen the accusation of abuse being leveraged directly against the accused to hurt his feelings. This is backwards, because this sort of individual would not be hurt by this accusation.

I've seen the situation you have described once in my life. Note that I'm only at the age where all my peers are just starting to get married and settle down so I am predicting there is more to come. Though I have scanned the relationships subreddit enough to see your scenario crop up more than a few times. It is of course from the male perspective though so who knows how accurate those are.
