i dont even understand thinking in terms of "women's issues". they always seem to involve the government doing something i think is unconstitutional or should be allowed to do.

Two sets of problems. Global and local/Western. Global first:

The rates of child marriage, rape, and enforced birth are frighteningly high, regardless of laws.
Education is forbidden in many countries. If not forbidden, girls are often forced out of school to raise families.
Limited access to perinatal care means giving birth can kill mother and baby. It can also lead to fistulas.
Stigma around menstrual period and lack of sanitary supplies. Also, lack of places for women to shit and piss. (Seriously).
Honor killings, rapes as a constant threat, etc. all exist as well.

That women around the world risk them or their loved ones being attacked or killed for rejecting men.

You wanna know why women tend not to be straightforward, why women say "I have a boyfriend," why women lie about not being available? This is why.

Ones that people are probably less aware and maybe are not as huge as rape, murder, and the like?

Ugly girls are afforded few opportunities and I believe have to work much harder than even ugly males to get what they want in terms of academic, social, or monetary success
Same goes for minority women
The amount of cattiness and general bitchiness girls show towards each other and how uninvolved parents are willing to be in stopping it, discouraging their little "princesses" from doing this shit. It disgusts me to see how cruel some girls can be to others and how laughed off this behavior is from a young age.
If you have painful or heavy periods your life will suck a lot for a while, especially if you are young and no one is willing to help you get those problems solved. Some girls are literally out for a week every month on bedrest because of periods and few men take the pain and annoyance of having one seriously.
People in general don't take women being in pain seriously which is very horrific. Like I've seen countless stories that describe women in excruciating pain and they are basically ignored or told to suck it up. Also I live in China where female suicides far outweigh male ones are very sparsely reported. It really irks me to see TRP and the like ridicule women suicides or attempts as for attention. Just from a mental health standpoint if someone is trying to kill themselves to get your attention they are obviously in need of support.
Women tend to take abuse from kids more so than fathers. This is just anecdotal but the number of stories I hear from parents as a teacher and just from people around me it seems like when some people were kids, especially boys, they had a phase where they were just incredibly violent towards their mothers. This isn't little 5 year olds. I'm talking 13, 14, 15 yr old boys. Some parents just casually tell me So and so demon child was not allowed to play video games so reacted by slapping mother in the face, kicking her, threatening to murder her. Same goes for American boys, I distinctly remember watching some of my male classmates scream in a very frightening way at and threaten their mothers.

I just started a new job and it is just shocking to me how the two women here are just expected to make coffee, clean the microwave, cook for the company party and clean up after, etc.

The microwave was a disgusting mess, so I took it upon myself to clean it. Someone came up and said, "Oh sherry usually does that".

I was like, fuck, are we in 2015??

I could say tons, but something that gets talk about often and then dismissed is catcalling. It's SO annoying, so uncomfortable and just unnecessary. We say we hate it, stop telling us to get over it or that it's not a big deal just stop. fucking. doing. it. Yes, there are bigger problems in the world for women, but this is something so easily solved so why not just stop?!

Not a woman but there are several women's issues I think are important.

For one, legalization of abortion/birth control/family planning in general. There are still places around the world where these are extremely restricted and even outright banned. For the record, I support the position that abortion of a pre-viable fetus should absolutely be available upon the mother's request. I also support the morning after pill and any form of contraception. The pill freed women to control their own lives and I consider that a good thing (since I believe everyone should control their own life), and I'd like to see the benefits of pregnancy-by-choice spread more widely.

For two, the issue of honor violence/female genital mutilation etc. endured by women in many (not all, but many) Islamic communities. For those who want to support this issue, I recommend the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Foundation (www.theahafoundation.org).

I think the real problems faced, globally, by women, are in the developing world. They're intertwined with religion quite substantially (not just Islam. Fundamentalist Christianity in Africa especially can be awful), and also poverty.

How would I fix things?

First, the US should frack, drill and build more nuclear plants. The goal should be complete energy independence from the Islamic world, which will lessen the amount of money that the Saudis can spend on funding Salafist Islam (the kind of Islam that creates stuff like Al-Qaeda and ISIS). In addition, I'd go so far as to suggesting the US fund some of the work of reformist Muslims such as Irshad Manji, and to spread the works of her and Ayaan Hirsi Ali and also non-Salafist/non-fundamentalist Islamic clerics throughout Muslim lands. Yes, this is blatant cultural imperialism. I don't care. We all know the rulers of most of the Islamic world are pretty damn cafeteria in their Islam too, so I doubt they'd resist.

I'd argue the above would be far cheaper and more effective than simply bombing the Middle East over and over again. We've been trying that for quite a long time and it hasn't worked. But yes, we Starve The Beast economically (Dubai liberalized quite a bit when it needed foreign tourism money) and we launch a Culture War to encourage civilized, nonviolent forms of Islam.

As for how we deal with Christian resistance against abortion/contraception/etc, this is going to be very difficult to say the least. But I will say this; religious fundamentalism correlates quite strongly with poverty, and secularism/social liberalism generally correlates with wealth.

The US Bible Belt is in fact becoming richer - the South is growing more quickly economically than the rest of the country. Evangelical Christianity is dying out so we can presume these trends will continue. Most American Catholics don't believe in the Church's teachings on sex/sexuality and there are plenty of somewhat-liberal-leaning American clergy.

Africa however is a problem, but if wealth encourages cafeteria religionism (as opposed to fundamentalism) then we should prioritize economic development of the region. As an economist, I think the solution is more open trade, but the other problem Africa has is that there are few stable, non-corrupt governments that can guarantee property rights and act as neutral arbitrators. This would have to be worked on as well.

TL;DR - the biggest women's issues in the whole world seem to be at least in substantial part due to religious fundamentalism. Ergo, encouraging modernization (both theological and economic) is probably the most effective way to address those issues overall.

Local problems:

Too many girls and women being informed women don't do "x" because it's not what girls do. Ranging from science to shooting guns.
Emphasis on raising girls to be feminine instead of interesting human beings. Weird drive over there in TRP fatherhood about making sure their girls wear dresses; much less about their girls doing math.
Unequal health care. Less likely to receive pain medication, more likely to be told they have mental issues when something is physically wrong.
Accusations of favoritism when something goes a woman's way, but being told "just suck it up" when it doesn't. How does that even work?

The big ones in my country: - The fact that women are raped and left without access to abortion, pre natal care or counselling in concentration camps on Manus island, Nauru, Christmas Island, Villawood and Fernwood. - That indigenous women have fuck all access to prenatal care, womens health screening services (things like mammograms and pap tests), and are routinely exposed to domestic violence. - The lack of education for girls in remote, indigenous or conservative ethnic populations. - the epidemic if domestic violence.
