How would being able to choose who you are attracted to effect the relationship dynamic?

It would be just be absolutely brilliant because you could make objective decisions instead of being dictated to by looks. You could pair off with that woman you met who you always got on great with, with whom you have so much in common, who you could talk to all night, but with whom you just didn't feel any attraction. Considerably more healthy relationships would inevitably result.

Unfortunately it's never going to happen.

All those shitty relationships where the woman feels guilty for not being attracted to her otherwise so great man would start to work.

All those thirsty guys would lower their standards and ugly girls start to get attention.

The attractive girls would have to lower their standards even further.

In the short term the world would improve, marriages becoming perfectly happy, picking partners you actually fit together with.

In the long term everything would go to shit with obesity, nobody really making any effort in anything to improve; like drugs, just a cheat code to life because you experience all the happiness without the substance (pun not intended) behind that happiness.

I'd like to add a specific question to your scenario; If women could actually choose who to be attracted to as described above, do you (anyone) think they would choose to be attracted to beta provider genuine nice guy types.

I actually have to disagree with these posters who say there would be a sexual utopia.

If it was truly an on/off switch what would happen would be the total weaponization of sex by women. Women would be free from the curse of the tingles. This means all that would be left for men is a competition of who could be the biggest beta. Sounds like a nightmare.

Ooo I think it would probably be great, so for devils advocates sake here's a downside from a more sociological angle.

It would pretty much eliminate diversity in thought/opinion, over a long period of time. With this "ability" people would choose who they are attracted to based more on cultural conventions than anything; so for now the heroic NFL player would still get a lotta poon, though now successful nice guys would definitely get a larger proportion too. But some herdlike behavior would emerge; because your dad liked this kind of woman and is such a great guy and overall example, you may like that type too as would siblings, maybe friends if youre more of an alpha etc.

Disney would be king.

Eventually you would have all men going for women with upper to high level smarts, humor, fitness, etc because those are all culturally valued things. Same for women, they would go after kind, decent-looking and well dressed, fit, funny, and smart guys. A LOT more people would just hit it off and get hitched very young, in the 18-22 range. There would be less diversity, because more people would try to hit that cultural ideal to attract a mate rather than just be themselves with the hope that the right chemistry will just connect some day.

It would probably result in a much nicer and more clean/utopic society, but it would definitely be a less diverse and creative one. Much more boring place to live!! Maybe the rise of a communist or police state, because this could create some problems...

So going off on a limb here (hey its a hypothetical!)

The lower classes would (and already do) have a much harder time hitting these Puritan/Disney well-dressed well-educated and kind ideals and since now reproduction is on the line they will eventually get very disgruntled and maybe revolt. In this case, new culturally well-regarded values would come to dominate attraction, probably much more conventionally Alpha ones having to do with physical strength and toughness. Think Idiocracy, unless the boring police/socialist state can save the day.
