Why Feminists devalue femininity and female beauty

It's never ground for a good debate to make those kinds of claims about your opponent. It's akin to us saying that reds hate women, or are all just bitter. They got hurt by some woman a while ago and just never got over it. Followed by some more talk about how TRP is based on irrational feelings and lure in damaged men. I think that's all true, but I don't say it on here because it only leads to a back and forth of "is so, is not!"

Feminism's attack on beauty standards is attacking this notion that women's value come from her appearance, or that she must look a certain way. I don't like some of the extremes they go to, but I fully agree that women should think carefully about what they value in themselves, and not simply base it on how men value them. Actually, I think that most women do this anyway, but nonetheless it is good. There is a strong focus on women to look good, and some women spiral into low self-esteem when they don't look how they want. Feminism's attack on beauty standards is, at its heart, an attempt to counteract this focus. It might be misdirected or poorly applied, but that's what it is about. It's not because they are jelly of all the hawt women and it's just not good grounds for debate to argue that.

Does this matter? Being fat and ugly doesn't make them wrong, just as being slim and beautiful wouldn't have made them right.

The problem here is that people who think this see women through a twisted kind of filter. They think women are meant to be some kind of product, produced for men.

Therefore they think they should strive to be the kind of women they want to see in society. Which can extend to not wanting to see women they consider attractive 'damage' themselves with tattoos, hair coloring, piercings etc

Which means they don't want women to have autonomy and their own choices. They want women to be a product for their consumption.

In this fashion, feminism is intrinsically a downward trend because the only thing a beautiful women can do to that makes herself more desired in a society, is to reduce the amount of beauty in that society.

Again, they're seeing it from this twisted filter. It's healthy for people not to obsess over their looks and bodies. Beauty obsession is everywhere. Yet, people are still fat.

The emphasis has to switch to physical activity - right from childhood. Instead, girls start obsessing over their body, which sets up a cycle of guilt, which can too easily lead to an eating disorder and overeating down the track.

Anyone who puts the focus on male and female beauty is contributing to this. And we all do it. "Isn't he a handsome boy?" and "Isn't she pretty?" instead of focusing on what a child can do. And girls cop that way more than boys do.

Isn't it amazing how feminists actually hate attractive, successful women and are at war with real femininity?

They don't.

I've said here a number of times I used to work with a large number of promotions models - all slim and attractive because the job demanded it. And at least half identified as feminist. And of the ones who didn't openly state it, they still had feminist ideals - making their own money and building their own career before marriage and babies.

I don't see how it follows that this behaviour would be specific to feminists, rather than just "women".

Alternative theory, "redpill", traditional, anti-feminist women in the west tend to be on the older side. A lot of RPW regulars seem to be my mother's age. Whereas the third wave feminist young tumblr crowd tend to be college age or in their 20s and thus more physically attractive. Maybe traditionalists are trying to reduce the value of these young women by branding them as slutty/unfeminine ect?

You haven't come across lipstick feminists yet? Or the 3rd wavers who consider being attractive empowering?

While I agree that a part of 2nd wave feminism was about rejecting beauty ideals (Naomi Wolf's "The Beauty Myth" unpacks this in a fairly accessable way), this message has evolved into "you are more than your looks" rather than "reject beauty".

I thought feminists want women to be successful, and that is why they want them to have more power, unless perhaps you think "successful woman" means "successful housewife." I don't think most feminists are anti-beauty, either, just that they are anti- being judged solely based upon your beauty.

I don't think this is true at all. This seems to be a strong undercurrent in American masculinity. However, most of the rest of the world appreciates well-dressed, well-groomed men who have a sensitive side (for example, David Beckham, various Asian male pop stars).
