Many liberal or feminist types believe that gender roles shouldn't exist.

In this sort of world, being born male would mean you have male genitals, being born female would mean you have female genitals. There's no special expectations or standards you have to meet just because you're born with one or other set of genitals.

However, would there still be transgender people if such a world existed? Do transgender people want such a world? If so, why do they become trans in the first place? Doesn't embracing a gender role kind of fly in the face of eliminating gender roles?

And conversely, as a feminist, if you want to eliminate gender roles, how can you support a bunch of people who want to embrace gender roles? If you want women to not have to be soft, feminine, emotional, etc. how can you support people who want to be women so they can be soft, feminine, emotional etc.

Also, if trans people have an "inherent" gender identity that doesn't match their assigned gender identity. Does it follow that women and men also have inherent gender identities? Which may then manifest as gender roles?
