This is a pointless hypothetical.

Lifting has benefits outside of aesthetics. Improved circulation, strength, bone health, and mood -- just to name a few.

Many men are drawn to lifting and continue to lift because it results in feeling good.

If I lifted simply for women, I don't think I ever would have gotten very far.

However, I was drawn to it, and still am, heavily due to the positive feelings a hard weightlifting workout results in. Consistency is not a problem because I genuinely look forward to every workout.

I actually think that this is an interesting hypothetical that tries to draw a wedge between the RP focus on seduction versus the one on masculine self improvement. It's like asking what would happen if we woke up tomorrow and women only wanted the most pathetic beta males: would we still strive to preserve traditional masculinity or just give in? To take it a step further, is masculinity valuable for its own sake?

[–]cascadecombo1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is it interesting? Its highly flawed, there are simply too many benefits to simply discredit something like OP is trying to do.

is masculinity valuable for its own sake?

For it's own sake, what do you mean by this part?

[–]whatsazipperPedestal Demolition3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I don't find it interesting as a hypothetical because it's pointless. It's sensible that we developed to find indicators of health and fitness attractive in both sexes because it leads to better living.

If women woke up and only wanted the most pathetic beta males, and men woke up and only wanted women who were old and obese, we'd be one pathetic species facing its demise due to having come up with a system that can't even track the right qualities for survival.

You're one of those people, aren't you? The one who always has to point out how a hypothetical like zombie apocalypse could never happen instead of enjoying the thought experiment or just keeping it to yourself.

This is a debate sub. Fuck off.

Sure thing, bub.

[–]abbypets0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Most forms of exercise lead to a good mood and all those other benefits you listed, so I'm still wondering why TRP only ever suggests lifting. Whither the cardio?

[–]whatsazipperPedestal Demolition0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All that testosterone gets put to use. Some cardio is useful. Run or bike a bit, preferably at varied paces. HIIT. Sprints. Or whatever you enjoy that fits the bill. But I'd say lifting takes top priority.

[–]abbypets1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why exactly is lifting top priority? The USDA recommends more cardio than strength on a weekly basis, probably because cardio is more effective at increasing circulation and bone density while less effective at giving idiots injuries, and heart disease is the top killer for both men and women worldwide.

Not to be argumentative- I really don't care how you or anyone else chooses to work out- I'm just trying to figure out why you guys all like it so much. I don't assume you do it for women at all, which is why I am interested in this hypothetical.

[–]whatsazipperPedestal Demolition0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lifting is more effective for improving circulation.

Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise improve circulation, but studies have shown that anaerobic or resistance exercise shows a greater increase in circulation. In a study funded by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, researchers studied 10 healthy, active men during both aerobic and resistance exercises. They determined that the resistance exercise increased blood flow to limbs more than aerobic exercise.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/342490-exercises-to-increase-blood-circulation/

In my own experience, I have found this to be verified. I had some problems with circulation due to an awful health condition (thankfully it was treatable), and found that working the muscles in the area restored circulation better than general cardio.

As for the debate: I'm not saying choose one or the other. Both sexes benefit greatly from engaging in both on a regular basis, and they absolutely should. Paired with an appropriate diet and lifestyle for ones goals.

As for why guys like it so much, we reach an abstract point where my conscious mind can't decode the reason I respond well to it: I don't know. Yet it's most enjoyable for men and men have the capacity to gain enormous strength and muscle compared to women. So we're more or less designed for it.

We seem built to respond well to it. Much like we're also prone to fighting (which is best when we do it under controlled circumstance) and competitive sport.

Lifting heavy weight and performing substantial physical work in such a fashion is quite satisfying and I don't know if there's a way to put it in words.

[–]hyperrrealLoves fun2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but I wouldn't eat enough to gain a lot of weight. Best of both worlds.

[–]TheLizardMonarchMauve Pill[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't mean unattractive in the way of seriously deformed, I mean considered a hindrance to attraction like fat is seen on women.

[–]DevilishRogueKnows more than you2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No. Red Pill is in part about making yourself a desirable partner, so a Red Piller would not "lift" if lifting made them unattractive.

[–]Villaintine╰▄︻▄╯2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, surely there'd be some other form of fitness advised depending on the most commonly attractive body type.

[–]cascadecombo0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nah man, that's not it. Not to mention the other benefits from it are too high. It's nowhere near as simple as you are making it out to be.

[–]DevilishRogueKnows more than you0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As a bottom line, it really is that simple. Lifting isn't the best exercise for health, it's the best for improving strength and hence dominance. If the consequence of building muscles were being less attractive to the opposite sex then there are a bunch of other exercises that would offer correspondingly more advantages and Red Pill would advocate those instead.

[–]Invalidity1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As whatsazipper said, this is a pointless hypothetical because it denies a strong evolutionary premise. The men who were strong and dominant survived throughout generations. They ensured that their genetic material would be passed on.

The only possible way being muscular could ever be unattractive is by the influence of social stigma. If society frowned upon muscular men heavily, there's a small possibility that a handful of women would find it unattractive. But deep down, the primal instincts of female tell her to find strong men or dominant men. Generally speaking, muscular men tend to exhibit more signs of dominance than men who do not work out.

[–]autoNFAPurple Pill1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A better comparison is Chinese foot-binding. Both excess fat and bound feet hinder health. Lifting boosts health.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this is one of those things where semantics get in the way of an accurate answer. PUA/seduction people would stop lifting, MGTOWs would still lift.

[–]cascadecombo1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you're saying, if for some reason, doing something that was healthy for us, kept us younger and more energetic, and also can give us confidence boosts but made us unattractive, would we stop?

First off, that would never happen, attractivness is more than just looking nice, the confidence and such that is acquired from lifting is also a boost, your question really really is rather poor, since there are too many other benefits that directly tie into what people call being attractive.

[–]still_very_alive1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If by "lifting" you mean just that, then probably yes, but to a lesser degree. I would, however, shift my focus to cardio.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's kind of a useless question. Muscles are a proxy for fitness. If being fat was a legitimate way of being fit, then over the eons women would start to see that as attractive.

Thanks for putting aside our differences on a debate sub and not engaging in petty insults. Ohh wait...

[–]VarsitySlutTeamCptI'm on mobile.0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hah the fact that TRP lifts solely to be attractive is dense, its part of it but not the whole thing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yes. I train MMA when I can. not lifting isn't just foolish. It's bordering on dangerous.

[–]RebootedMale0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, because bone density. All exercise/habit system that builds bone density will build muscle mass. You need strong bones as you get older.

[–]myTRPaccount0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just started lifting and am still trying to make it a habit. I don't lift for the aesthetics. I lift for the health gains. As a smoker who likes playing basketball on the weekends, I need to lift to keep my cardio up and so I don't get manhandled on the courts. Increased strength, stamina and fitness overall are worth working for.

[–]sh1vRed Pill Man0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have thought about this carefully. Yes, I would stop. I'd try to balance it out and get enough in to still feel stronger than the average dude, but if it came down to attractive vs strong, it's better to be attractive. In a way, it's stronger to be attractive -- attractiveness combined with social adeptness is to our modern era what muscles were for most of human history.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This question is an absolutely meaningless question and is so wrapped up in confused ideas that it is not even worth the attempt to unravel it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

YES

[–]AFormidableContenderPurple Pill Man0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Can we just say "working out"? "Lifting" sounds like the epitome of BroDouche.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Can we just say "working out"?

Nope, that's not the term TRP uses.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

they use both terms

lol, two words for one thing? that's fucking pretentious

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I see 'lift' there way more than simply 'working out', but I think that's because they view lifting as the manliest way to work out so they focus on that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

i'm pretty sure it's because lifting helps you get strong and muscular, much moreso than cardio

would bodyweight training be less BroDouche/MasculinePerformative for your standards?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No, because it's still a ridiculous focus on hypermasculinity.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

LIFTING! MUSCLES! GYM SHORTS! NIKE! IT'S MASCULINITY GONE MAD!

edt: a quick explanation, hypermasculinity as a concept is the academic equivalent of a daily mail headline

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Cool, TRP still seems obsessive about lifting, to teh point of referencing it all the fucking time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i'm curious what you think of /fit/
