How is "hypergamy" different from "standards"?

I think hypergamy is more constantly looking for an upgrade, even while in a committed relationship. In other words, if you're not the alpha-est alpha she's ever seen, show any weakness or any emotion or ever lose frame, she will lose all attraction to you and leave you for the next alpha she can find. Or try to reduce you to a beta bux.

I don't believe any of that is true, BTW. I'm sure it applies to some very terrible people but it is not the majority. In other words, as one user tried to get rps to concede - the women they choose are hypergamous and will leave you if you ever drop alpha. To which I would suggest to them - pick better/different types of women.

They're different in two main ways.

They differ in terms of awareness. "Standards" are a conscious phenomena; you are aware that you have them and you are aware when you apply them.

"Hypergamy", on the other hand, is a largely subconscious instinct. Most women (there are exceptions) being influenced by it aren't aware of it. They just know that they are attracted to guy 'A' but not attracted to guy 'B'.

They also differ in terms of objectivity. When someone sets a standard it tends to have an objective metric (height, weight, number of past sex partners, etc.) which an individual should have no more than, no less than, or fall with in a specific range of.

"Hypergamy", in contrast, is relative. A woman will be attracted to a man who is superior to her in terms of his SMV, and who is superior to other men in terms of his physical, social, and/or economic status.

Women tend to both have standards, and be hypergamous. They may have a list of qualities they're looking for in a man, but still not be attracted to a man with those qualities unless he is better than the other men around him.

Men, by contrast, will be sexually attracted to almost every woman who meets their standards for attraction. They will also be sexually attracted to a large number of women, who don't meet their standards for an LTR.

Hypergamy has a very specific definition, roughly synonymous with the phrase "marrying up". This, coupled with the fact that women tend to have inflated sense of SMV, is why you will not hear much talk of 'male hypergamy.'

TRPers have observed a few trends, and you can feel free to agree or disagree:

Men are willing to fuck almost any female even close to their SMV. Women only want to fuck men with (what they percieve to be) equal or higher SMV. Both women and men are generally only willing to commit to a partner with (what they percieve to be) equal or higher SMV.

For most of history, due to the strength of marriage and other societal limitations on hypergamous behavior, this was ok. However with the advent of birth control, casual sex and ability to not settle down for long periods, the SMP began to break down.

Freedom to have casual sex without settling down enables women to obtain sex from men they would never be able to obtain commitment from, leading to a few high value men accumulating large harems of women of varying SMV. Further, all the women involved tend to develop an inflated sense of SMV because of their temporary association with these higher value men.

When the actual SMV of these women begins to degrade to the point where the high value men no longer see any use in them (hitting the wall), they will finally condescend to settling down with a man with equal SMV. (Often Hamsterized as 'my priorities began shifting, i now think hookup culture is dull, i want a Real Man who's ready to commit.') However, even once this equal value man is obtained, the woman, having been spoiled by high value men (alpha widow) will always view her partner with a bit of contempt.

Men tend to not have inflated sense of SMV, because they cannot get access to sex OR commitment from women of higher SMV. Only equal or less. There is, though, an analogous phenomenon to alpha harems, and that is high SMV women cultivating harems of beta orbiters who provide her with free emotional support. If anything though, this phenomenon reinforces the woman's percieved SMV, because she knows she has enough value to get the emotional support (similar to commitment) essentially for free. That said, the orbiters themselves are fuck ups too, because they are wasting time and energy that would better be spent on raising their SMV and pursuing more receptive women.

Standards are pretty much consistent. If a man likes a girl, he won't stop liking her because he sees a prettier girl. Hypergamy says that a woman may like a man UNTIL she encounters a more attractive man.
