I think the main problem, not only in this particular "open relationship", but in most others is that they've been together for a long time (in this case, 3 years) and don't have any children yet. This is an empty and unproductive relationship from nature's perspective. The main biological female imperative to get impregnated, carry a child and give birth is not getting fulfilled in this relationship.
