My best friend is an electrical engineer and said anytime he has worked with women it has been nothing but a headache and tough to accomplish anything. He also says he doesnt know how some of the women he worked with even got their degrees because they would struggle with basic concepts from engineering school

Even if she was not a woman, this is just sort of the fate of those that have been "over-educated" to an extent. They may know all of the theory, but they have none of the practical knowledge that actually matters in putting things into a useful and tangible reality, that's why I rarely give much heed to "Engineers" that have got that title from their degree, and not the actions in the professional world.

I worked with a female engineer just out of college. She was getting a lot of accolades and was being fast tracked. All of a sudden one day she quit. It was discovered she was banging some upper managers and word got out so she quit. Did any of the managers get fired? Nope. Everything was quietly swept under the rug.

I had a female friend that was a medical engineer. She worked on the plastic tubes used for IVs and such. She said she was a C student in college and engineering firms tripped over themselves offering her jobs to fill their quotas. She makes awesome money and gets to live overseas all expenses paid a few times each year. She does diddly squat at work.

Astonishing that this woman is a qualified engineer and yet doesn't have a clue how to use any of these perishable skills.

I'd question whether she actually has the "real world" skills... rather than simply having "passed the bar" so to speak, without actually having an understanding of what she's supposed to have learned.

Why do I say that? Well... beyond her being a female, there is this:

"I didn't know how a refrigerator worked until a few years ago, and all these dudes I worked with grew up taking them apart... its hard to compete with that".

Yeah, they grew up "taking them apart" (and presumably also "putting [most of] them back together" in working order)... whereas she has "examined a theoretical drawing" and come to a "conceptual understanding" (sans any actual "work").

And apparently she has zero desire to change that... ergo, she really doesn't have any "skillz."

It's actually quite common for people to have "passing grades" in various classes -- and yes, even earn "degrees" (hells bells, even get "advanced degrees") -- without ever gaining any of the actual skillz.

I wouldn't leap to the conclusion that she is qualified simply for having a university degree. I'm fairly certain there is a journeyman phase that actually would bring you up to speed at being qualified.

And the gender-equality quotas that are all the rage these days are going to create some real problems. They are predicting a shortage of 150,000 doctors (primarily in GP and pediatrics, ironically) because more women are getting their MDs, then working either only a few years or becoming part-time, whereas men with MDs would work 40 years. Be careful what you ask for, ladies.

It's true. I work with a female engineer before. She had a degree in process engineering... Great stuff! She had no clue to operate a printer or her own laptop which she has to use for her job 🤦‍♂️

Most female STEM end up not using their degrees. Either they have kids, switch career, or simply work less or even part time. Worst case are the doctors, where many female graduate but when time comes to actually do the 70hrs most male docs do, they simply give up. It's not that they're not capable to learn the skills, they don't have the stress resistance hormone to cope with what it takes to do high stakes no bullshit jobs. That's why they're teachers and hr after a few years...

Higher education is wasted on most women unfortunately.

My engineering degree isn't for mechanical and even *I\* had to take thermodynamics, which was listed in the mechanical engineering course list, and very clearly went over how refrigeration works, with all sorts of calculus and tables.

The fact that your youth companions hooked up some R12 or R22 (depending on age) to some leaky systems 20 years ago to fix their keg-erator has nothing to do with it. You should be embarrassed to have a mechanical engineering degree.

I know two sisters, one has an MBA and the other has a PhD in biology. Between them, they probably worked less than three years after receiving their degrees before they got married. Now they just travel around the world with their high earning husbands. Nice work if you can get it, but gee, way to waste an education that somebody else could have benefitted from.

I think the real lesson to be learned here, is that before she got married, popped out a kid, and become a stay-at-home wife, most guys probably would have considered her a NAWALT unicorn. Hot young woman with an engineering degree? That's kinda rare...

But the thing is, they never stay that way forever do they. Women are NAWALT unicorns... right up until they're suddenly not any more... Once she finds a provider workhorse its "gibs me dat success, so I don't have to go back to work"

People talk about the diversity quotas and stuff. Yes that is true, but you don't really need diversity quotas when they are actually getting good grades and passing courses. That would make the stats look great. But behind the scene its not actually the case, they use the laws against you. How can you dare question about if they actually know the shit when they can just sue you if you do t give them the pass or to the extreme case, an A?

Up until the 1950s girls weren't offered the same educational opportunities as boys because they'd usually have kids, undergo hormonal changes and not want to work anymore. Excess education was considered a waste of money.

Like a lot of things, seems they were right back then.

Now men have to work longer and harder to pay for an education that few women utilize to the same extent as men. Apparently that's called equality.

I'm in my last year in undergrad engineering, just finished up prelim design. My team, all men, were working one day for 12 hours straight to complete our specification document. We then went home to eat/rest and came back about 4 hours later (so around 8:00 AM in the morning). We then worked 16 hours straight, except for food.

We work in a number of labs, but the guys in my group (except for the Ecuadorian dude) are blue pill to the max. So they hang with another design team...all women.

While we worked, the drama was on another level...the entire time (and I mean this), each of these women bitched endlessly about another woman on their team (who happened to not be there due to some other issue). For 12 hours. And then for another 16 hours. While us men actually worked. They didn't even have work to do (easy project because #womeninengineering); they just wanted to bitch and moan.

Nothing is worth that. Not a damn thing. Graduate, make that money GYOW!

That's because women never look at things long term. Their priority at university is to get good grades and not to learn something useful for the work you want (probably because they don't want it).

That also apply to work, many of them spend tons of time talking of their dates in front of the coffee machine, theb they get surprised if the nerd guy gets promoted...

I have a female subordinate who is really good in her job. And she is a single mother with a boyfriend. She could have been for one or another reason an exception. Having said that and nevertheless I solely judge subordinates by their performance.

Sounds like an excuse. If experience is missing she could disassemble such a device and play around with the parts. I hate it when women are playing the damsel in distress routine.

Female engineers are generally a bad joke. Case in point - I am a machinist. Three of us from our shop spent over an hour trying to explain to a female GA Tech honors grad that if she wanted us to open up a hole for a .050" wall bushing, we would have to make the hole .100" larger. I walked out at that point... we had even used sketches on a dry-erase board to try to explain it and she still couldn't get it.

Some people manage to get a degree by just manipulating everyone around. Isn't uncommon, specially with women. I personally worked with two female engineers that were far behind everyone. They're great at schmoozing though. I feel like STEM courses in US unis are speacially prone to this, since they try to not turn into a intellectual pissing contest, which makes things easier.

Bout to finish up my second year of Pre Engineering. Been pretty much finishing up core, and don't have much knowledge on this matter. I'm going to guess though that you need refrigerant, electricity, and water to run a refrigerator don't you? To disassemble it you would have to turn off the key components I'm guessing so you don't mess something up.

I dont work with engineers, but I do work in a professional field in which experience is HUGE developing a skillset. I have found the females dont care about WHY we do things, instead they want the answers. They dont understand that the if you understand the WHY then you can extract the answers.

Usually they excel when they land a client load that is consistent from your to year and things dont really change. Its just a matter of basic management at that point. For me, I am a "fixer." I get the problem clients in which things are going horribly. Typically the client has realized how bad it is and are about to fire the firm. To be good at this you HAVE to know what the hell you are doing and be dynamic to learn the specifics you just dont know. You have to break down the problem and see what is working and what simply isnt. You have to move the needle from "horrible" to awesome in a short period of time, you cant be incremental with a 10% improvement. I have NEVER met a female that was a "fixer."

These dudes in her example wanted to know why and how it works.
