Last Sunday my sister and I were scheduled to board a flight home. We had been visiting another country together to visit some extended family. Said family lives in rural villages so takes quite a while to get there from the city.
Anyway, on our way through airport security my sister gets taken aside for a random pat down search... not sure what the proper name is. But my sister refuses as the person is a middle aged guy and she doesn’t want to be “groped by an old man” as she put it. She insists that a female pats her down. The guy explains in broken English that no females are available today and to let him search her, which she continues to refuse. This goes on for about 10 minutes, during which I continually ask my sister to just let him do his job, at which point I simply ask the guy if I can continue on. He says I can, so I apologise for my sister’s behaviour and do so.
I don’t know what happened after I left, but after about 30 minutes of sitting in the duty free area my sister txts me to come out. She says she was made to leave the security check point and is now being refused entry. I simply replied “I’m not delaying seeing my kids because you couldn’t swallow your pride and let the man do his job. I’m not coming out.”
She kept blowing up my phone, so I turned it on flight mode and eventually boarded my flight home. My parents (and sister obviously) think I acted incredibly cruelly by “abandoning” her. I disagree, she’s an adult now and should know better than to pull that nonsense in an airport of all places.
So AITA here?
My kids hadn’t seen me for almost a month. Not gonna delay seeing them for my moody sister.

Another woman who wants to act a fool and expects a man to bail her out, no matter how it negatively affects the man. And her family (minus the brother) is taking her side. This is me not being surprised.

Naw, I looked at the OP's history and all of his perfectly reasonable comments have hundreds of downvotes. That was enough. It's Saturday, it's beautiful outside and I'm getting shit ready because I have friends coming over for a bonfire. Reading comments by idiotic white-knights would just kill this awesome mood I'm in.

3rd world countries are no joke. Due process is not a thing, you can disappear in such places. He should have pulled the sister aside and said better the pat down than missing the flight or be hauled off to a 3rd world jail where there are worse horrors awaiting you.

They're always here "MEN HAVE NO IDEA OF...[x]..." but no. Men know. Often better than you. They're just able to swallow their pride and not just do whatever the fuck they want. Comments are pure cancer and once again pure hypocrisy. "patdowns are unconfortable especially from a man". Okay, so don't go anywhere where it's needed and stfu. Or deal with it like anyone else does. A man doesn't love to be "groped" neither but we understand what must be done to minimize risks. So shut up and stop asking for special treatment. Everyone feels unconfortable when it happens, but it happens FOR A REASON and not every man is a fucking groper; if anything given the kind that often complain about this there's a change that he would be just as disgusted by touching YOU, but it's his fucking job for safety reasons.
They want all of the advantages one can have (safety, etc) without having to deal with anything they don't like that it could bring. Fuck them. Yes it's uncomfortable (and no crying "muh rape" or "muh he's molesting me" doesn't work because it certainly isn't the intent and because EVERYONE is subject to it) but that's how it is. Or you can just go in the plane completely naked. Your choice. (...well, no, given how some of them are nowadays they'd probably chose this)
And the woman is a fucking adult. He has no reason to deal with the bullshit she brought upon herself. Fucking WK.

The utter theatre in the comments...
"Terrifying"
"Groped"
"What women have to go through on a daily basis"
They are all a bunch of agenda-driven liars. Yes, there are absolutely cases of sexual harassment and I'm sure some, of all the men that have ever done that job, have been perverts - but the level of hysteria is completely disproportionate. In fact, who's to say the women giving her a pat down isn't also a pervert?
Her brother is literally right there, chaperoning. The chances of the guy doing anything other than his job are so minute that if you took that logic with everything in life, not just your feminist rhetoric - you'd never leave the house.
If someone, male or female groped me when doing that I'd think 'Jesus Christ' and complain either then or afterwords. If any of my female friends had it happen to them they'd think 'Dirty old fuck' and again, complain in some appropriate way.
This 'back-of-the-hand-on-my-forehead' collapsing in theatrical shock is doing nothing but attention seeking and convincing everyone else in your echo chamber.
All based entirely on an intensely unlikely hypothetical, that even if it happened wouldn't need a victim complex and therapy.

Tough choice, having to pick between your kids or your sister. Both options were bad, I don't think either choice would make him an asshole, he was caught between a rock and a hard place.
Every traveler knows or ought to know that in a foreign country, you're subject to foreign laws and may not have the same rights one has at home. If you're not willing or able to let someone search you, don't go to places where a personal search is required.
Ultimately no one can be responsible for the actions of another adult, only one's own.

/* I went on a ramble responding to one of the controversial comments. After finishing it I thought it deserved better then being crushed under a heavy pile of minuses. */
Here is the thing. I 100% believe and agree with you that YOU should care for YOUR sister. I would be willing to bet she has not taken advantage of or pushed your bond of trust beyond the point where you begin to question your sacrifices. This depth of willingness to sacrifice oneself for another person is often predicated on your personal belief to how much you are willing to sacrifice for that person. For some that sibling bond is immutable for others it is not. I pity those that will love unconditionally because they are easy to take advantage of. It is not reasonable to project your sibling relationship on theirs.
I seriously think the only thing he did wrong was not go up to her and say “I am leaving now. Either comply with security and come with me or stay here.”
The thing she did not do (as far as we are told) was offer an alternative solution to the problem faced by security. I mean they can’t very well pull her aside to search her then have her deny them and then just let her go. I think she should have asked to select another agent. Of course they would still be a man but at least they were not the one to “select” her for a search so he should seem less threatening. Unfortunately we see it oh too often, women just stamp their feet and huff and puff rather than discuss a solution.
[+]DevilWDevil-6 points-5 points-4 points (11 children) | Copy Link
Regardless of the circumstances, it's a real piece of shit move to abandon your sibling when there was an established notion that you would be traveling together. I dont care if you're male or female, doing something like that to someone who clearly doesn't have the necessary life experience to handle it is just plain cruel. I'd give any of my kids a crack upside the head if I heard they left their sibling alone down town, let alone in an different country entirely.
[–]realChebz4 points5 points6 points (10 children) | Copy Link
Look. She made a decision to act like a cunt, because she's used to be treated as a princess and having rules bent for her. It was her decision to throw a fit and refuse a pat. Her brother is not responsible for her tantrums. If it wasn't her shitty behavior but an accident, I would wholly agree with you.
[–]DevilWDevil-2 points-1 points0 points (9 children) | Copy Link
Its reasonable to be uncomfortable with someone touching you if you're unsure of their intent. Random searches are intrusive enough, but if there was a chance that someone singled you out for the sole purpose of molesting you, I would refuse that shit too. And with an age difference like 18 and 30, chances are his parents wanted him to look out for her while they were in another country. Tourists get snatched up left and right, I wouldn't leave any of my family's side, no matter how cunty they were acting. You'd be a real fuck-head if you did.
[–]iseehot2 points3 points4 points (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]DevilWDevil-1 points0 points1 point (7 children) | Copy Link

[–]iseehot4 points5 points6 points (6 children) | Copy Link
Yet she was not willing to negotiate his inconvenience. Keep in mind the person you are dealing with. Even family can cross the line and once that is done, they are breaking bonds.

We do not know the conversation, only his abridged version of it. We both are building our conclusions on incomplete information.
You start with the premise that family bonds trump behavior more than I do.
I start with the premise of personal responsibility trumping family bonds. ' I don't think we have the same world views.
[–]DevilWDevil0 points1 point2 points (3 children) | Copy Link
Personal responsibility is one thing, abandoning your family is another.
[–]iseehot0 points1 point2 points (2 children) | Copy Link
So, you argue not abandoning a family member ever?
[–]DevilWDevil1 point [recovered] | Copy Link
No, I'm not arguing that. Theres plenty of times when familial bond doesn't cover for the shit family does. If they're treating you like an asshole or fucking you about, then yeah, fuck em. They don't deserve your time. But the guy gave no indication of something like that. No "she's always been such a cunt to me growing up" or "She always throws a tantrum when she gets inconvenienced, and i always end up paying for it". Nothing like that. From the way he describes it, this was the first incident, and he was ready to piss off at the drop of a hat.

Guys like you are the reason everyone sees MGTOW as just a rebranded incel movement. MGTOW is about bringing self respect back to men, not raging like a prick about someone clearly in the wrong with something they did.
[–]SlainFunicle8 points9 points10 points (15 children) | Copy Link
Where is the raging? how is he in the wrong are you saying he should have use force to make his sister be searched, because someone is family does not mean they get to waste your time on nonsense, searching is a part of his job, why act like a child and pretend he is not allowed to do his job just because you said so, she did not want to follow protocol so she can stay.
[–]DevilWDevil-3 points-2 points-1 points (14 children) | Copy Link
He's in the wrong because he clearly doesnt have any care for his family, yet he still interacts with them. I'd you're willing to leave your fucking sibling alone in a foren country, why bother interacting with them? Why go on a trip with her if you don't give a fuck about her unless you're a two faced bitch? And it's standard to have same sex searches, so her being freaked out about it was valid.
[–]novhaku4 points5 points6 points (5 children) | Copy Link
God, you're stupid and YOU don't care about the people you "care" about. Guess what. Caring about someone doesn't mean being a fucking yes-man and complying to any demand. That just makes people entitled. It also means being honest when they're doing bullshit and not being afraid of doing what has to be done. Otherwise you're not "caring" because you're "teaching" the person that even if she does bullshit, you'll always be here to take care of it. Which will leave the person into a mess when she does it when you're not around. This isn't "caring about someone". BECAUSE I care for people, I'm not afraid of letting them face their responsibilities even when I could just NGAF. What you call caring is just a massive self-blowjob done by you deluding yourself by thinking that you're "so altruistic" because you SEEM nice on the outside. It's actually a terrible behaviour that isn't helping anyone.
And no, freaking out isn't "valid", it's fucking sexist. Do the same post with a man instead of a woman and we'll see the result (well, apparently it has already been done and you can guess them pretty easily). In any case, standard or not, the US isn't the whole world and if you're not able to deal with a foreign country, you avoid going there, period. the whole world doesn't revolve around his sister's navel.
[–]DevilWDevil-3 points-2 points-1 points (4 children) | Copy Link
You have no fucking idea of what caring actually is and god help anyone in your care. Making sure someone is independent and outright ignoring the safety of someone in your direct care are two entirely different fucking things you absolute moron. If anyone gets patted down by anyone who derives sexual satisfaction from doing so, thats a enormous oversite and not okay.
[–]novhaku3 points4 points5 points (3 children) | Copy Link
That's only if it is the case and absolutely nothing here is a sign of that of any sort except "feelz". It was just a guy doing his job which is for some reason judged "creepy" and therefore he must be a rapist. There's a gap between a real victim and an imaginary one. And someone encouraging imaginary victimhood and sexism isn't a person that cares about you at all. You're acting as if the guy was a proved sexual offender, which is ridiculous and wrong. If your sister falsely accuse someone, without even knowing the person, of doing something, then she is an asshole. Sister or not.
And don't worry, people in my care end up as really good people, and people who don't trouble anyone because of their delusions. Which cannot be say for people getting a free out of jail card constantly because "muh family so it MUST be right despite a complete lack of indication".
Breaking news, people can lie or be deluded about their "safety". How many women lied about their exes and got beat up by the woman's brother as a result? REAL safety and perceived safety just because you aren't in your damn safe space are two very different things. And while I'd defend a family member if there was conclusive proofs that the other person was in the wrong, if there isn't any, screw that, and in this case it CANNOT be judged as right since she refused out of sexism and victimization, period. You assuming the "sexual satisfaction" from it when nothing about this is actually proved says a lot about the problem; sister or not, people can and will have toxic delusions depending of their mindset and encouraging them isn't good. Try to tell that again in a situation where ACTUAL molestation took place and then we'll have another discussion about it that will go in a completely different way.
Assuming things just because "this person is your family, therefore she's flawless" is retarded and bad for everyone involved.
[–]DevilWDevil0 points [recovered] | Copy Link
The part you quoted was talking about how its sexist for a woman to complain avout pat downs because no one would care if it happened to a guy. Thats wrong, and people should care. I wasnt saying if she felt threatened, then the guy had bad intentions, I meant her feelings were justified given the circumstances. She didn't call him a rapist, she didn't try to get him fired, she just avoided something she saw as a threatening situation. Thats her actively trying not to be a victim. What the fuck is the issue with that?
I'm not saying her feelings lined up with reality, I'm saying she had a right to feel that way and it was pretty shitty of her brother who was more than likely tasked with looking out for her to fuck off the way he did.
Again, I seriously doubt anyone you've looked after has come anywhere close to functional, given they're alive at all.
[–]novhaku2 points [recovered] | Copy Link
It doesn't, because the world doesn't cater to everyone's feelings. And it's how it should be, otherwise it would quickly become a complete mess; and that's how SJW are born. That's something that you're supposed to accept even as a teenager; the world doesn't revolve around your navel. Period.
You seeing something as threatening doesn't mean that you can ignore it, AND BOTHER OTHERS BECAUSE OF IT JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN IMMATURITY. Expecting others to babysit you without protesting just because of your feelings (and they weren't justified, that's just being paranoid, and therefore means CATERING TO A PARANOID PERSON'S DELUSION, which of course is a verfy good thing) isn't normal nor a good thing, and no one should be blamed for not doing it. Quite the opposite.
She didn't accuse him of rape, but she "just" immediatly judged him as a molester. Period. This isn't justified and the "circumstances" aren't anything terrible, unless you think that all men are gropers. Which is textbook sexism and, if you expect others to side with you and adapt their life to suit your own needs without caring about their own circumstances and their own life, narcissism.
Where is the problem with that? The fact that she wasn't a victim and that it wasn't a shady situation to begin with, for starters. Expecting the whole world to revolve around what YOU want instead of adapting to it in one way or another (like MGTOW does by avoiding women, instead of trying actively trying to force the whole world to change to suit their needs) like any sane person would do. Which is even worse when there is NO "victim" and it is in her head to begin with; the man wasn't a well-known one charged with sexual misconduct. At this point it's just prejudice. which wouldn't be a problem if she just stayed at home and avoided all contacts with the muh evil men, but she didn't. The whole world isn't supposed to cater to your will, and if it doesn't and you are a bother to others (even people she is supposed to care about, because muh family, but it looks like her family was less important to her than her delusions) because of your immaturity, you deal with the consequences. Period.
She didn't "had a right to feel this way". ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except her personal preferences in men was an indication of any kind of creepiness going on. If she's attracting problems because of HER OWN choices and because of her way of judging people, she's to blame, period. Nobody has to be her to hold her hand just because she's immature, otherwise we'd all be catering to feminists out of pity, which also means enabling people like them. That's not how the world works. the world has rules. And you play within these rules or try to change them (and face the consequences for it, and they aren't nice).
Don't worry, they are. They aren't special snowflakes though, which is a really good thing in my book. They're able to accept people despite their prejudices without throwing a fit about it, which, surprisingly, tends to lead to people becoming better. Thanks for the comment though, it really shows what kind of thinking your reasoning is coming from, your PoV couldn't sound less reliable even if you tried to. Someone thinking something doesn't mean that it has to be true just because you're biased or because the person is too immature. Well, that alone falls into the MGTOW realm and isn't that different from what we're doing so whatever, I'll let it slide, if you are paranoid when it comes to men but don't expect any special treatment, you do you, more power, but wanting the whole world to be twisted according to these beliefs is something else entirely, you make your own choices, and you deal with them. The brother had no reason to stick with her if she wasn't able to second-guess her stupid prejudices despite him trying to make her think about it. He already tried more than enough, if she refuses to change her stance and stay on her imaginary reality, there is no reason for him to inconvenience himself for her retardation. Again, a stupid person is a stupid person, and as long as her actions are stupid you don't owe them anything, blood-related or not. Good people are good people, stupid people are stupid people, and that's it. Family or not. Repeating that it was normal that she felt threatened by a pat down will not make it true,no matter how much she, and you, want to believe it. If you're not able to deal with it, don't leave your house/safe space. The real world need compromises, and if something bad happen, first, her brother was her, and second, there are laws for that. But throwing a fit definitely isn't the way to go or "understandable" when it inconvenience others. You're acting as if she was ABSOLUTELY going to get raped (or any other traumatic thing) if it happened. No. And even if she just believed it despite it being wrong, giving up to someone's insanity (particularly to your own expense) isn't a good thing for anyone involved, once again.
[–]DevilWDevil0 points [recovered] | Copy Link
Doesn't what? What are you referring to? I didn't imply that security should let her through without searching her, I'm saying she has a right to feel that way because having a man search a woman or a woman search a man is not something that should be happening because of the possibility of malpractice. The world doesn't cater to you, sure, but there are fucking regulations in the airline industry, you fucking dunce.
Seeing something as threatening doesnt mean you can ignore it...? She didn't. She voiced her feelings that she wasn't comfortable with the situation and was looking for a reasonable solution. It's not delusional to think someone with power over you can misuse that power, what sort of fantasy land do you live in?
Given that a security pat down is supposed to be same sex, it wasn't immediately. He wasn't supposed to be patting her down to begin with.
Oh yeah, airport security in a 3rd world country isn't shady? Fuck off. And again, She did fucking adapt. She felt there was a threatening situation to the situation, so she refused to go along with it. If she felt that the security guard had ill intentions and just let him do whatever, she would've became a victim, so instead she just avoided the situation entirely. Thats adapting to the situation, one way or another. And was reasonable to think your family would support you with that. And more important than her family? What, having getting home waylaid a couple of days is the end of the world for a parent? Thats wanting the world to cater to you? Having your brother stick with you in a situation that makes you uneasy?
That's a pretty big assumption, that her taste in men was to blame in that situation. She didn't request a younger, more handsome guard pat her down instead, She requested a woman do it, clearly indicating it wasn't the physical attractiveness that made her uncomfortable with him. And sticking with your fucking sibling isn't catering to the fucking world.
I'll say again, I wouldn't be surprised to see you watch someone drown saying "well, should've been a better swimmer, shouldn't you cunt?". I get wanting those around you to take responsibility, but there are certain circumstances where that goes out the window.
Im not acting like she was going to get raped, I'm saying she felt cornered in the situation, and it really fucking sucks when someone who was supposed to be your family throws up deuces and scrams when you're in a situation like that, regardless of your gender. Yeah, if the sister went around thinking every male was going to rape her, she'd need psychiatric help, but to our knowledge, this was a first time thing with the brother. It wouldn't be giving into her insanity, it would be sticking by a scared family member in a foren land.

You live in one of those fucked up families where no matter how old you get your Mom will always think you are her little boy don’t you? You’ll never be an independent man in her eyes you will always be her good white knight resource provider.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my mom and will always take care of her but she knows damn well I am not her boy anymore and she treats me as the man I am.

He did try to convince her. She couldn't hear reason. He did the right thing by saving himself first.

Fuck off with your shaming tactics

The brother did say, and do this (see quote below). So imo, he tried to talk sense into her.

If she wanted the benefit of his protection then she needs to listen to him when he tells her what he expects from her. She felt entitled to get things her way. She now understands the consequences of her way and will hopefully listen in the future. However our society will make her out to be the victim when the problem was self inflicted.

Wow... These replies... To hate women so much you'd want to see your own sister suffer to make a point. If loving and caring about my sister makes me terrible then that's a badge I'll wear with honor.
Pathetic bunch of men you lot are.
I'll still honor my parents, and love my siblings. My sister is a good woman. Sucks that you lot have such terrible women in your life.

Fuck off. People must be judged by their actions, not by "what they are". And in this case she was beingf stupid, selfish, entitled and was making things harder for everyone because of her entitlement and sexism. It's not about making a point. It's about people being held responsible for their choices and for what they do. Nothing else. It could be a male and it'd be exactly the same. Someone being your family doesn't give it a special pass to be a jerk without consequences and any impact on your respect for them. You are the sum of your actions. Family often has a special place because you usually know them and their reasoning better since you grew up with them, so it's easier to find excuses for them, but in the end, if they're doing unreasonable nonsense, they're doing unreasonable nonsense. If your sister makes an innocent man's life harder, sister or not, she's a bitch.
Nothing "holy and that has to be defended no matter what" about people that can be just as retarded and abusive as everyone else (if not more and in a worst way, since they have some kind of authority), be it mothers, fathers, sisters or sons. If someone behaves poorly, it behaves poorly, and encouraging this behaviour is the worst thing one can do. Particularly if you really DO care for them.

Such is the world we live in. Not all sisters are like yours (NASALY).

Here is the thing. I 100% believe and agree with you that YOU should care of YOUR sister. It is not reasonable to project you sibling relationship on theirs.
