Hard to walk away from 150k. Depends on what your expected costs are, what kind of lifestyle you want to live. Also on where you live. When I faced a somewhat similar situation I made the decision as focused on the financials as I could, so that it would be a considered, calculated decision and not a rash one based on feelings which can change. I made the bottom line the bottom line.

I made it my #1 goal that I never wanted to work again (unless it was something I really wanted to do) and so I retired at 46, but not living high on the hog. I have a good nest egg that some people would think makes me independently wealthy. However, were I to live as if I were wealthy, it wouldn't take too many years before I was independently poor. What I really am is independently middle class. And that's fine with me, because my time is my own and I answer to no one, and that's more valuable to me than anything else.

I moved to a place with lower cost of living to achieve my goal. But different people value different things, want to live different places.

Prioritize. What is your number one priority? Your number two priority? Don't tell me, ask it of yourself.

p.s. this was only possible because I gmow… with kids/family, I would still be slaving away

I think the critical points here I are #1, #3, & #6 (#2 isn't entirely superfluous, but it essentially fits within/under #6):

1. I'm 49yo, single male, no wife, no kids, no mortgage, no loans... no other financial responsabilty.

3. I do enjoy my job but hate the 3wk/year vacation limitation. I've asked for a 3month sabathical a couple of times and was rejected every time.

6. What would you do mgtow? Would you retire and live off rental income and 401k or keep milking the cow that is slowly consuming your life?

First lets get some assumptions out of the way; and PLEASE to correct these if they're completely wrong. I'm assuming that in addition to the rental properties, you also already own (and have paid off) a primary residence; that you own (and have paid off) a vehicle or two, etc. I'd also assume -- since you seem to have paid off various properties AND well-funded a 401K, etc -- that even though you've had a gross income of roughly $200k recently, you are nevertheless probably living a fairly "frugal/minimalist" lifestyle.

Moreover, I am going to assume that you have some (hopefully fairly SOLID) idea of just how well you can manage to live -- that is the "lifestyle" you can expect -- off of just that rental income (or at least the net "profit" from such) alone.

Why that last? Because of your age. At 49, you're still a decade shy of being able to withdraw from that 401K without incurring substantial penalties (federal and/or state, depending on where you live)... those penalties aren't to be lightly dismissed, as they are SUBSTANTIAL.

So realistically you probably COULD just "retire" right now.

Whether that is WISE... well, much depends on the "style" or "level" of life you're comfortable living -- just how "frugal" can you be; and more importantly how frugal are you LIKELY to actually be.

Keep in mind that NOT having to commute into/back from an office on a daily basis can all by itself, probably save you about $10k to $15k in annual after-tax expenditures (gas, reduced wear & tear and thus prolonged service life/higher retained value of vehicles, tires, brakes, etc); and thus reduce your annual gross-income needs by around $20k -- of course THAT only works that way if you can avoid the "cabin fever" aspect of staying put, of PLANNING and COMBINING your various trips into town (once a week instead of everyday) and moreover that you DON'T find yourself just falling into driving somewhere/anywhere on a daily basis, 5 or 6 days a week, 20+ days a month just out of the multi-decade habitual practice of "going somewhere" (and trust me that can be harder to overcome than you might think; it's like a nagging OCD-type "thought" in the back of your mind, you're forgetting/missing something, but what? Oh that's right, you didn't GO anywhere today).

Similarly, you can probably reduce OTHER expenses -- especially food & entertainment -- if you learn to do those largely at home and for yourself (i.e. your own cooking, from supplies onhand & in the larder/freezer... instead of driving to/stopping at restaurant/fast food/takeaway meals).

I know some people who in retirement put very FEW miles on their vehicle (1/10th of what they did during working years), and who -- with some RARE "treat" exceptions -- eat virtually every meal at home (3x a day, 7 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year) and are quite HAPPY to live that way.
Conversely I know OTHER retired people who end up putting 2x the mileage on their vehicles than they did when they were working & commuting; and who RARELY eat at home, instead being "always on the go" and blowing inordinate amounts of money (you could even say "spending like a drunken sailor") on food & booze at various restaurants and other establishments. The idea of "staying put" is just something they CANNOT accept or even envision: to these types, that would be the equivalent of a prison sentence.

Obviously those are two ENTIRELY DIFFERENT/OPPOSITE EXTREMES of living a "retired life" -- the former can be done on a trivial income, the latter is likely to quickly burn through the largest retirement savings (with little to nothing to actually show for it) -- most people will fall somewhere on the spectrum in between, and in fact will probably wander from one end to another.

**NEXT... if you're REALLY wanting to travel 3 (or more) months out of the year (and do so for several years running) well that puts a different color on things:**

Your rental income alone is probably NOT going to be sufficient; and tapping any IRA/401K money (at least in the form of anything OTHER than pulling out already-taxed 5+ year old ROTH contributions) is going to cost you dearly in terms of remaining balance and later-life assets/income. That means you'd probably need to be looking at "cashing out" (selling off) one or more of those rental properties... obviously that reduces your rental income, but it WOULD give you the cash NOW to fund the travel; with the understanding that by doing so, you're also preserving the IRA/401K funds "unsullied" and allowed to (hopefully) continue to grow for another decade.

OTHER aspect to consider is that -- apologies for saying so -- but you're basically a "50 year old"... that means, unless you're already IN some "managerial" position, well it ain't gonna happen. (I presume you already know this.)

Problem is, your employment options -- even in terms of some lateral shift to some other similar engineering position (i.e. as salaried employee) are fairly small -- not impossible of course, just not as easy as it would have been to do in your late 20's or mid 30's. You're not washed up (in fact you have a lot of valuable experience), but alas you're also not a "spring chicken" anymore either, and you need to be realistic about your prospects.

What you CAN (potentially) do -- and this is an option you DON'T seem to have considered (or proposed) -- is switching to a "work from home" consulting/contractor role...

Possibly even WITH your current employer as a major (at least initial) client; either on some part-time (regular retainer) basis, including even some X day per week, or X weeks per month, X months per year "on site" work intermixed with some "remote/at home" work... or else even some project by project contract work (both with current/former employer; and/or other clients).

Among other things that can serve as a "transition" (rather than the dramatic "cold turkey" of quitting/retiring) -- helping you downshift from a 5+ day per week grind-routine, to a more independent self-managed life -- and which you can then potentially further downshift in a GRADUAL manner over multiple years. Fewer "withdrawal" symptoms, and much better way to adapt to your new status, budget, routines, etc.

Money-wise it CAN be a "win win" for both yourself AND your employer -- you can likely EASILY command a contract equal to or greater than your current salary; and yet in exchange for LESS actual "work hours" -- the hows & whys simply being the advantage to THEM of reduced/shifting of various costs from them to you things like "employer portion/matching payroll taxes"; ending various "unemployment" & other taxes, other overhead & benefit (and of course then you needing to obtain your own health insurance, etc)... the advantage to YOU being you can now deduct all kinds of "expenses" on a pre-tax (even pre-taxable income, i.e. pre-profit) basis, that you previously had to pay for with post-tax net income money; everything from gas & other vehicle costs, a home office space, home office equipment, possibly other professional equipment, etc.

Now I don't know for certain that the TYPE of engineering you do will necessarily be amenable to that -- but many types are (or can be); and they can actually also help create NEW opportunities that can "reinvigorate" your interest in your profession (similar, but yet different enough, projects for other companies/clients, etc).

Likewise, not all companies are open to those kinds of arrangements... than again MANY are, or can be induced to at least TRY such an consulting/contractor arrangement as a means of themselves having a more gradual "transition" on their engineering (or other professional) staff, retaining access to most of the experience you have built up, and training other personnel in your areas/projects; the transition (be it across months or years) as being preferable to simply losing it all, "lock stock & barrel" if you leave/quit/retire.

THAT too can be a way for you to "milk" them (of cash in exchange for LESS work, possibly even giving you MUCH more time "off" including even blocks of time); and at the same time, making them feel as if they are "milking" you (of experience/expertise, etc) to help train their other staff, and then operate at a reduced cost.

Personally I would at least TRY for some kind of a "transition" like that -- it's what I did a bit over a decade ago (when I became "semi-retired" at an age younger than you are now) -- and frankly pretty much everyone (myself, my former employer, etc) were all rather pleased with the way that the consulting-transition worked out.

How about taking 1 year off work, do everything and anything you want, then decide if you really want to retire or not.

I have been on leave for 8 months now, and i kinda miss work, so im going back to do that, just stockpile all that cash.

Or maybe take a more relaxed position, like instead of being out on field duty, move to office work or something. Just to keep yourself busy.

It sounds like the extra money isn’t making you any happier if the trade off is a 9-5. I would move to a beach in SEA. 48k a year goes a long way there. You could probably find engineer work that you could do online.

Hey Bro, I live in bkk... Ride it out for 5 more years. In the mean time buy 2 condos in BKK and 2 in Pattaya, rent to the tourists, and have a place for yourself in each. Live in BKK and spend your weekends at the beach. DO NOT TAKE A GF. since you've been here you know there is no shortage of rentals and short term gf.

Save save save... Tell work you need to come to terms on a remote work agreement. Then instead of a full sabbatical, you take 60 days twice a year until you retire.

Also consider continuing to consult after yo retire early. You're gonna want to put your skill and experience to work. Traveling and fucking only occupy so much of you time and mental faculty. A man like needs to use his brain even if your not in a full time or traditional job.

I don't have the high paying job but I make exactly the same as you in rental income and I'm about the same age as you. I manage the properties myself and it takes about 3 hours a month. I live pretty comfortably but my needs are simple. I'm not into traveling so I might not need to spend as much. Also I try to save money here or there by using coupons or shopping the supermarket sales. I grew up frugal so it's a hard to break habit.

If you think the job is consuming your life, then the salary's not worth it. If you think you can swing it on the rental income, then go ahead and retire or semi-retire. Like it was said elsewhere on this thread, maybe you can go into consulting or be a contract employee.

It's interesting how you are in a position that most of us aspire towards and yet you still have to ask someone else's permission to take a bit of down-time. Unless that person is a level 5 mgtow warrior then it has to be assumed that you have to get permission from someone that exists in order to serve women. And by extension you are inadvertently doing the same.

If you are on $150K per year then there is no doubt that you could find a job that pays half as much but requires you to be there for half the time. With your passive revenue streams to keep you topped up, you've got around 20 years where you still have close to complete bodily movement and functionality. How will you use that time? Working for some simp?

Once you're 70+ years old, it's more about salvaging what you can do with what ever function and movement your body still allows you to do. So my suggestion is to arrive at 70 having ticked every box that you set out to tick.

Ask your work if you can do a four day week, or a full week with shorter hours. If they don't agree, then find a workplace that actually gives a fuck about your wellbeing.

what are you going to do with your time? can you do a 1/2 time job? you could do night time courses in a community college, like : painting, sculpture, cooking. maybe forging knives? it takes a long time, and you could sell for a profit when you are good enough (i said it becouse there is a lot of engineering in making knives, working with metal, temperatures, the science in it, you could make the machines to material removal) and it is a lot of fun, you wold work with your hands. go to you tube and look at a few forging videos and maybe you enjoy it.

Find a job you love and that gives you the vacation time. Use rental income for luxuries/vacations.

Sounds like my life situation except that I don't have rental properties, but I still have 19 years to get those.

I have been thinking a lot about what I would do in your situation. But it all depends on your budget. If you think you can live off your rental property money, I would do it. Just remember the penalties for the 401k.

Seems like employers hate this idea. If you quit your job and did this then you would have to explain it when looking for a new job (which may be harder to find).
