As a highschool student I confirm that this show is basically the breaking bad for teenage girls. There isn't one day where one doesn't end up bringing it up and the "girls have it so rough" discussion starts.

Good analysis. Some other bullshit messages it sends:

"Good Girls" aren't attracted to Chads because they're jerks. (clips 1, 2)
If you're respectful, courteous and shower her with enough attention, she will be attracted to you and want a relationship. (clip)

I see feminism is still projecting the illusion that it's the "Good Guys" who girls really want. And if you look at the comments for some of the clips on Youtube, you'll see girls talking about how "sweet" and "caring" Clay was, and how they wish they could date a guy like him, when they likely have a Clay in their friendzone right now.

The truth is Nice Guys are disposable to women^[1][2], whose only purpose from her perspective is to be of service to her, and to be replaced when he's no longer of use. Any desire for a "sweet, caring guy" is really a desire for the jerks she dates to be more affectionate.

Had this story taken place in the real world, all those tapes would have gone to the people who hurt her the most. She wouldn't have so much as said "Thanks for being my friend" to Clay. He would have been forgotten.

I'm not interested enough to put myself through it, but I'd love for someone to suffer through dear white people and write one of these. I know it looks like the show is aimed at race and so doesn't belong here but I imagine it's a loaded "progressive" gun jam packed with a first hand look inside the matrix.

On a similar note, girl recently showed me her favorite movie , "stuck on love." Classic relationship drama centered around a family.

Movie opened to the successful author daughter propositioning a guy to skip the talking and bone purely bc she was attracted to him

Dad of the children portrayed as a nice guy(wife not interested in him) getting "used" for sex by powerful good looking married neighbor - portrayed as totally acceptable female behavior. Even the kids are aware.

And the main plot as far as i could tell: The brother, who is an attractive social outcast, is OBSESSED with gf with a glorified alchol/drug problem. She ends up leaving a family birthday party they were at together w another guy (black, after getting wasted(underage)) to do some blow and fuck. The climax of the movie was beta brother holding her unconscious body (in a caring poor thing way) and crying over it. She then wrote a letter about how sorry she was but how she has to ride the CC for a bit longer and hopes he's still there when shes done. Completey serious.

The girl who chose it fell asleep and i couldn't believe my eyes so kept watching. Needless to say I'm hard nexting that bitch. Watch it yourself if you need some rage before the gym.

I watched the show and while I hated it, it didn't seem to me like it was pushing an agenda.

Didn't get to see the second rape because I stopped when it was revealed that the main guy was on the tapes because he was such a good guy, but the first rape clearly was actual rape. The girl was in fact passed out drunk but the guy literally threw her boyfriend out of the room and forced himself on her, continuing even when she came to and started resisting. There's just no way to spin that as the girl having to take responsibility for drinking, if I pass out while drinking it's not on me if I wake up to a stranger pounding me in the ass when that's clearly not an outcome I wanted.

And if anything it actually shows the alpha/beta duality clear as day: the girl gets with half the football team in one way or the other before even considering her socially awkward nice guy bestfriend, choosing the popular cute athletic guy over her self-appointed Knight Protector every time.

What i would like to read, almost enough to write it, is an analysis of the shifting gender dynamics in disney movies

Sleeping beauty had the girl cursed that she would prock her finger on a spinning wheel before her 13th birthday and a drop of blood would fall and shed fall asleep until true loves kiss. I take this as an alleghory for a female having a menstrual cycle (the blood at age 13), then not being able to find individuation and flourishment until prince charming comes and brides her. Very traditional. Fast forward to Frozen and prince charming is a shiester and its the beta who wins her by being sympathetic to her insanity.

I'd have to disagree. Everyone I know whose seen the show thinks Hannah is petty for making the tapes and overdramatic in general. I cheered a little when Clay finally called her out on making everything about her. The show itself references the fact that Zach didn't actually do anything wrong, he just made a harmless comment. Hannah was obviously raped, the problem with reporting it was that she knew Bryce had the money/resources to get out of it and likely nothing would come of it, she'd only be screwing herself over further. She already felt "dead inside" by this point, and her plan going in was to seek help and guidance, from a GUIDANCE counselor, and her options were report or nothing. I don't think it's part of the "feminist" agenda for counselors to 100% believe potential victims about being raped, to AT THE VERY LEAST get more information before moving forward. Everything previously established about him applied that he simply wasn't very good at his job. He did a shitty job at a crucial time. I don't like Hannah, I don't "agree" with blaming someone for your own shitty choices/suicide, but from a watcher's perspective, yeah, I'd say that he made it worse.

Definitely down to have a further discussion about it, but in the end I feel like It's all a matter of opinion, no agenda being pushed here other than "don't be an asshole" and the basic and obvious "suicide is bad".

I finished it yesterday. It's so shitty. Acting, premise or characters' motivation aside, there are SJW-esque terms and stupid nuances all through the show.

Selena Gomez is an "executive producer" of the show IIRC. Pretty sure she paid to be there and didn't have anything worthwhile to add to the show.

Good lord I'd have hated a show like this when I was in high school. Now I just laugh at it. You do you Selena.

One last thing: if you want to watch a good movie starring the same main actor, watch Don't Breathe. It's pretty great.

As a product you have hammered into your head that being a loser/nerd/poor is virtuous and that being attractive/fit/rich is inherently a bad thing. This is, like all narratives created in media, false. Accurate. When I worked in mental health, this book was basically banned from the Unit. Nurses and psychologists (yes, even the feminist ones) both were thinking "wtf is this bullshit." It's the definition of victimization and "other people control my emotions".

I saw the complete season and I had previously read the book. I read the book without the red pill lenses and I got the message that in reality while everything that had happened to her was god awful they weren't "reasons" more like excuses, the girl had an un-realistic expectation of men and other people, she jumped and gave them all without thinking if she actually should, the guy on the other hand was just your average guy, he was decent, responsible and good.

The guy wasn't a white knight nor a cuck, he knew from the start the truth about her (that she had bad taste in men, in the first episode the first conversation is clear of that). He didn't pine for her like some people imply, he had a crush yes but in the story was focused more on himself, he studied and did other things that were (at the time) important to him, only after she died did he fell that he had missed a chance, he never made an actual move when she was alive because he knew she would shut him down. He stayed friends because she was one of the people who was with him almost daily.

He never said nor defended the girl from the actions, he stayed quiet most of the time when she was alive, only when he found out what truly had happened (in terms of what is criminally prosecutable) he did something about it.

Most people will take away that suicide will be glorified and there is some truth about that but the main message from the story is that they weren't reasons for why she did it, she did it because it was her decision. People realize that when they listen to Clay's tape (main character) because he did everything right (by society's standards) if she wanted more she would have simply asked for it and she knew but she didn't she just went with the suicide route. The main takeaway from this is that suicide will affect everyone you have ever met, mental health is a desease that needs to get treated and i don't know if you read but after the season premiered more people started looking for help, I don't know about you but I would rather have 99 attention seekers and one suicidal person calling a suicide hotline because they saw this show than a suicidal person not calling.

One of the things I actually liked about it was that it covered social issues without sounding preachy and pushing an agenda. The only agenda was don't bully kids, don't be a fuck tard, stand up for people, etc.
