Also give a quick look into the bus system - there is a direct city bus that leaves from city center bus terminal and it’s like $8 USD compared to the 100-300 that a tour company would charge you to do the same trip. So easy to use, easy to find as well , takes you right to the bottom.

I have been and it’s amazing. China is also a great place to travel solo. Welcoming people and crowded areas mean it’s always inclusive.

And remember. DONT GET ON THE FUCKING INTERNET IN CHINA FOR ANYTHING. Get a burner phone and email account if you need something. everything is tapped. Your very friendly, helpful, english speaking and attractive "guide" ....yeah she is with Chinese counter-intelligence. (Dont take it personally, shes just doing her job. And no she won't fuck you).

BTW op, I highly recommend you make visiting First Qin Emperor tomb in Xi'an the next stop. That's where the Terra Cotta warriors are. It is every bit as amazing as the Great Wall. Maybe you can make visits to both on the same trip.

Awesome! You will dig it! I went to China back in 2010 and got to visit the Badaling section of the Great Wall. It was cold and foggy but oh so cool!

Dont bother seeing the wall in Beijing, because it's so damned soggy you cant see shit. Go for another more rural locale, bring your camera, and sense of awe.
