Once it's revealed that these feelings were misplaced, the damage is already done. If not leading to outright, literal, physical death in short order, it will destroy a life for any number of years (often to the end) by diverting focus internally & backwards and thereby preventing any significant forward movement.

The worst thing is, practically everything our culture does further optimizes the conditions under which this wretched misery festers while shutting out other perspectives.

Sure, you may be one of the 'lucky ones', but there is absolutely no way to to know for sure because the situation can turn on a dime any time, and the odds are terrible. It would serve us well to encourage more self reliance in our young men. This is definitely worthy of our effort.
