When my daughter was 2 she had her tonsils removed.

Post surgery the nurses bring her to her room, and the ex and a gaggle of nurses were hovering around my screaming daughter trying, and failing to comfort her.

They were surrounding my daughter, completely blocking me out.

I just sat in the rocking chair waiting patiently listening to my daughter screaming her head off.

A minute or so goes by, and my daughter catches a glimpse of me through the crowd of women surrounding her and immediately thrusts both her arms my direction in the universal "I want daddy" gesture.

Reluctantly one of the nurses picks her up and hands her to me in the rocker, and my daughter immediately gets quiet, lays her head on my chest and promptly falls asleep while I rock.

Every one of those women had a look of shock and disgust, except for one older nurse, who just gave me a wry smile and walked away.

Pure instinct... when the chips are down and shit gets real... who ya gonna call?

I got raised in a religious family where my Dad was involved pretty frequently. But a woman's manipulation knows no bounds and when she started fights he got the blame; when he worked hard to provide he was the one that 'didnt' care enough to be there'; when the divorce came around he was the one that didn't love his family. It's disgusting to think she had that kind of manipulation on me. Thankfully I was 17 at the time and a few years later started learning the truth. She would never stop talking about how bad he was, and he was the opposite. It's hard to learn what a good person is when your mind is so tainted against them. Good thing I'm free now!

When I was 7 years old my mother split up with my dad because he was layed off. He was working nearly 12 hour workdays and always brought home flowers when he got home from business trips and shopping. When the time came for corporate evaluation his entire department lost their jobs. My mother left him and took me and my brother. My dad was forced to move to New York for work. (I lived in Texas at the time). On the 2 day drive my dad cried the entire way up. During his 4 year absence my mother blamed him for all my families issues. (When they married she quit her job and became a stay at home mother for 7 years). This led to a divide to our family. She perpetuated the "wage gap" that females have less rights and that my father was evil. You know, the typical feminist bs. I now live with my father who earns 250k a year and my mother is a bank teller earning 50k. My dad has custody of me and my brother now so he doesn't pay child support, even tho my mom cheated 1.7 k out of my dad. I'm 16 years old and I now realize that my mother was the reason my family is so fucked.

I have seen this phenomenon in other families as well. For all the nurturing qualities that women have, time and again I have seen FATHERS step in, take hold, and almost instantly calm their children, either with affection or play.

As someone who grew up without a father, it REALLY pisses me off to hear Feminists pretend as if fathers are superfluous.

I was raised by an amazing single mother. Don't say that all of them are bad. There's definitely an issue with it and a father figure is immensely important, but it's wrong to assume all single mothers are bad, feminists or in any way incapable of parenting.

Father Factor in Drug and Alcohol Abuse – Researchers at Columbia University found that children living in two-parent household with a poor relationship with their father are 68% more likely to smoke, drink, or use drugs compared to all teens in two-parent households. Teens in single mother households are at a 30% higher risk than those in two-parent households.

(The percentages of those divorced and never married are not significantly different from one another.) 16 percent live in the home of a relative or a non-relative. 27 percent have an annual family income of $50,000 or more. 85 percent: Among the 30.2 million fathers living with children younger than 18, the percentage who lived with their biological children only. 11 percent lived with step-children 4 percent with adopted children < 1 percent with foster children Recent policies encourage the development of programs designed to improve the economic status of low-income nonresident fathers and the financial and emotional support provided to their children. This brief provides ten key lessons from several important early responsible fatherhood initiatives that were developed and implemented during the 1990s and early 2000s. Formal evaluations of these earlier fatherhood efforts have been completed making this an opportune time to step back and assess what has been learned and how to build on the early programs’ successes and challenges.While the following statistics are formidable, the Responsible Fatherhood research literature generally supports the claim that a loving and nurturing father improves outcomes for children, families and communities.

Children with involved, loving fathers are significantly more likely to do well in school, have healthy self-esteem, exhibit empathy and pro-social behavior, and avoid high-risk behaviors such as drug use, truancy, and criminal activity compared to children who have uninvolved fathers. Studies on parent-child relationships and child wellbeing show that father love is an important factor in predicting the social, emotional, and cognitive development and functioning of children and young adults. 24 million children (34 percent) live absent their biological father. Nearly 20 million children (27 percent) live in single-parent homes. 43 percent of first marriages dissolve within fifteen years; about 60 percent of divorcing couples have children; and approximately one million children each year experience the divorce of their parents. Fathers who live with their children are more likely to have a close, enduring relationship with their children than those who do not. Compared to children born within marriage, children born to cohabiting parents are three times as likely to experience father absence, and children born to unmarried, non-cohabiting parents are four times as likely to live in a father-absent home. About 40 percent of children in father-absent homes have not seen their father at all during the past year; 26 percent of absent fathers live in a different state than their children; and 50 percent of children living absent their father have never set foot in their father’s home. Children who live absent their biological fathers are, on average, at least two to three times more likely to be poor, to use drugs, to experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems, to be victims of child abuse, and to engage in criminal behavior than their peers who live with their married, biological (or adoptive) parents. From 1995 to 2000, the proportion of children living in single-parent homes slightly declined, while the proportion of children living with two married parents remained stable.

-- Have to put a caveat in there -- because not ALL (biological) "fathers" seem to be capable of that.*

And, on the opposite end, I've seen Men -- who are not even related to the children in question (including large groups of kids -- multiple dozens or more -- and from several & various families across a range of ages, from toddlers to teens) -- be able to accomplish much the same thing... and often without having to really say or do much of anything.

-- The KEY seems to be whether the man has earned/gained/garnered RESPECT -- sufficient that his calm, confident, assured, authoritative** you could say even a sort of inherently "commanding" competent presence is in and of itself both compelling AND reassuring -- some would call that an "AMoG/alpha male" presence, and I wouldn't necessarily say they are wrong in describing it as that.

-- I've never seen a single woman able to do that -- even though a huge number of them (and likewise many other men) try, but fail at it -- instead they seem to have to revert to "gavel-ling" and/or shouting, screeching, arm waving, etc (none of which ever really works -- they might obtain everyone's attention with their antics, and some group {at least of adults} MAY "come to order" but it's seldom complete, and never "instantaneous").

* And while it's anecdotal -- the commonality that I've noticed with the "dads" who FAIL at it -- is that they generally don't "wear the pants" in their home and are NOT really the actual "head of the household" (even if/when they are formally/ostensibly labeled as such by wife & others) -- they're either often henpecked, milquetoast, or otherwise subservient/submissive to an overbearing/bossy "wife"; who is then the REAL "authority" (alas usually authoritarian**) in their relationship -- and everyone seems to be well aware of it. That is people (children AND adults) seem to subconsciously KNOW that even if they've never met the man before (probably conveyed largely by body language & voice inflection, and there are probably other visual & auditory "tells" we pick up on without realizing it -- who knows, perhaps there is even a subtle/subconscious "pheromone" type olfactory phenom going on, akin to the aphorism that animals can "smell fear"; well perhaps humans can too).

-- ** There is a definite distinction between "authoritative" and "authoritarian" -- the latter tends to try to claim authority via office/position/title, etc (and typically becomes "tyrannical"; acts in an arbitrary manner, is biased, often seen as "unfair" even corrupt, manipulative, etc); whereas by contrast the former is more of a character/personality trait, proven by past experience with the person, and possibly (as I noted above) conveyed via "body language" or "voice inflection" and assorted other visual & auditory (and again even olfactory) cues.

So I've got a little (maybe long) story about that in my family. In the fall of 2011 my mom decided to get a black lab, literally just decided that day, because she decided she needed a companion for herself to ride around with her in her work truck and go to the properties she manages. So I get home from high school to this cute little 8 lb black lab puppy on our side porch and my mom telling me not to let our border collie on the porch in case she attacks it (border collie isn't vicious she's just defensive of my brother, my dad, me, and our house). Since my dad wasn't consulted on this decision he said it was her pet to take care of, train, and pay any costs that went along with him. Anyway, we begin training the black lab who my brother names Bob and he's a smart puppy who learns pretty quickly what's right and what's wrong. After about a month my mom decides she can't do this anymore because it's too much work I guess and she slowly starts doing less for him and my dad starts doing more. My dad doesn't train him though because he works longer hours than my mom and it was expected that she would continue training him even when my dad started feeding, bathing, and letting him out/in every morning and night. So about all he knows how to do are basic things like come, sit, don't eat until I tell you to, and stay. My mom hates Bob and her reasoning is because he's untrained and always an asshole to her ever since my father took over caring for him. Which is hilarious because my family lives on a small farm with my grandparents who still run a farming and logging business and Bob always goes to the sawmill a few times a day around the same time each day to see the workers. The hunters who come to hunt our property love him, my grandparents love him, my friends love him, and pretty much anyone who has ever met him love him. He's now probably 130 lbs and is just the most loyal/friendly dog you could find. My dad is an avid runner and Bob will run beside my dad the whole time no matter how far he runs. He also will just lay in the garage and chew on a stick while my dad works on cars. He pretty much just enjoys being around people he knows love him. It just still blows my mind that my mom could hate that dog. Occasionally he'll dig in the garden or do other stuff that most dogs do sometimes but for the most part I think her real issue is that she brought Bob home and then Bob decided he liked my dad more than her.

My mom bought two teacup yorkies when I was in high school. Spent something like 4k on them because they were supposedly show dog breed. She took care of them for about 2 months until she got bored with them and stopped feeding,watering,walking them. I picked up the slack and those two were always with me from that point on.... until I moved out, my mom forgot to let them in and the male died of heat stroke. Fuck I miss those dogs....

One day decided she wants a dog because I wasn't living at home and she was lonely or some shit like that. Her and dad go and get a rescue dog. Mixed breed. She took care of it for a few weeks then got bored and dad had to take over.

Then I got back home and slowly the dog got used to me. I take her on walks every day and play with her but she still loves my father the most. It's like she remembers who was the one who fed her and took care of her the most.

Have an upvote, because that's damn similar to what my ex-wife did. Her dad had a Lab that was well-trained and fun to play with, so she wanted one too - never mind the fact that we lived in a subdivision and he had a large tract of wooded land where his dog could run around. So we got the Lab, and she took care of it for the first six months or so. Took it to basic training classes, made sure it got taken outside when it needed to go, et cetera. And then, like had happened with most of her other pets, she got bored with the responsibility. We set up a run and pen with a house for the Lab outside, and she became the "outside dog". Since I didn't have the time to take care of her on any regular basis (short of feeding her when I got up and before I crashed into bed when I got home after work, and occasionally taking time off work so I could run her to the vet for her appointments), after about two years we ended up giving her to a friend of the family that had a place in the country - and, of course, it was my fault that we had to give up the dog, because in her mind I was the one that "wasn't taking care of it". All things being equal, at that point I would have rather kept the dog and gotten rid of her.

My mom tried giving Bob away a couple years ago without telling anyone and once everyone found out she was shamed into oblivion. Bob is essentially the mascot of our farm at this point (what my grandpa, her dad, told her) and she can't give him away. My little brother went and talked to a guidance counselor at his school about being distressed over my mom trying to get rid of Bob and that counselor called my mom haha. I feel like that's the real reason why she gave up on that. My mom now has a little lap dog that also doesn't like her nearly as much as she likes my dad and brother (I don't live there anymore so she likes me too but it's not the same) but she's too small to run away and is mostly confined to our house. It's kind of sad. If she ever has to choose between my mom, brother, or dad she will go to my brother 6/10 times, my dad 3.8/10 times, and the very rare 0.2/10 times when my mom probably has food or something.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! My wife and I never had children due to her issues that led to hysterectomy. Our rescue Black Lab ALWAYS came to me first and it really pissed my wife off.

When I came back from a 4 month military deployment my dog went apeshit jumping on me, licking me, doing that joyful yelping shit, and wouldn't let me more than a few feet from her. Drove the wife nuts.

Apparently the dog would stand guard on the house while I was gone, but not really give two shits about the wife other than feeding time.
