I live in a big city and make $130k a year at a white collar job. With the changes in health insurance for 2017, and increases in my federal tax burden, I can no longer afford to live.
After child support, alimony, cheap rent (sub $800 a month), college loans, bills, but no budget for entertainment, eating out, or trips/games/anything at all, I will now be short $1000 a month. That includes already eating rice, beans, and cheap chicken cuts, and drinking only water or the free coffee from work.
Last month I was scraping by with nothing to save. Now I am in the red by default.
Maybe I can choose to scramble to get a part time job? Maybe I can beg for freelancing gigs? Maybe I can choose to not pay alimony or child support and wait for my inevitable garnishment or arrest? Maybe I can choose not to pay rent and wait to be evicted? Maybe I can try to score a better paying job, even though I am at my peak?
All for what?
Ten years ago I was just out of graduate school. I was single, saving money, and building a future. I went out and had fun. Life was good. So how did I get from A to B?
I got married and had kids.
The debt piled up from a big wedding and worthless purchases because I believe she "deserved" it. My wife wanted to be a stay at home mom, putting further strain on us, but I made it happen because it was "best" for the kids. Then last year she decided, after having two kids and becoming a social media zombie, that she no longer had the tingles for me. I gave her everything she wanted, and it was not enough.
All I had left was split between her and the lawyers.
I am definitely to blame for this fuck up. By being a believer. By assuming others were honest, and that society and its laws were fair. By not seeing the writing on the wall or listening to other men. By believing women were rational or honorable.
Now my ex-wife, the government, and the banks impatiently hold out their hands, waiting for their cut.
I'm done. I'm abandoning this failed existence, and all the accounts, numbers, IDs, and contact methods that go with it. If I have to sleep in a park or on a street corner, so be it. If I'm forced to go to jail, so be it. I refuse to do this anymore. I'd rather be a piece of human trash than a struggling serf.
I've been reading about survival training and how to live on the streets for about half a year now, obsessively. I must have known deep down in my gut that this day was coming, the day where I would have to choose between finally having the balls to say "fuck it" or trying to shave hairs for the privilege of eating food and sleeping indoors.
To anyone with street-living experience: tips are welcome.
To the young MGTOW: don't repeat my mistakes.

Problem with any/all of those computations is that they REALLY don't take the "cost of living" anywhere NEAR "fully" into account. Shit anyone making $20,000 a year is probably (via $$$ and GDP per capita figures) in the "top 5%" (or higher) of the planet -- but that doesn't mean what it SEEMS to mean.
Absolutely people living in third world places have ridiculously low (official/formal currency-based) "income" -- but they also have comparatively trivial "expenses" -- and the vast majority of their "work" (nor the fruits of it) is simply NOT accounted for... it doesn't show up on any "GDP" figure (and not simply because it is "black market/cash" but also because it often isn't "employment" at all).
To wit: even in first world countries someone can engage in "non-economic" work -- per example the person who heats their home via wood they cut from trees on their own property (and thus neither a "heating" bill NOR any "formal" wage on the woodcutting); same with food from a garden, water hand pumped/carried from some well; game or livestock they hunt or raise & then butcher themselves, etc.
-- EDIT: There are even other ways that those metrics get egregiously misused/abused -- the most common of which is the "energy inequality" nonsense -- i.e. that the person living in northern US or Canada uses multiple times more "energy" than someone living in say Tuvalu; Well no shit Sherlock! See, the Earth revolves on a tilted axis, which causes this thing called "seasons" (at least in places OTHER than Tuvalu) which not only causes temperatures & amount of daylight to vary (rather massively), but which then (again in places NOT like Tuvalu) requires the expenditure of energy to sustain life. And I have nothing against the people who live in places like Tuvalu, but their life and existence is an aberrational "ideal" by virtue of their location -- and it simply ISN'T anything at all like that of people who live elsewhere.
That said, I don't disagree with the main thrust of your argument.
OP is making a DECENT salary, and there is no PRACTICAL reason he cannot meet his obligations AND be able to live "fairly comfortably" himself.
He may indeed have "screwed himself" during the marriage -- NOT saving, piling up a shitload of (likely unsecured) debts, creating far TOO "luxurious" of a "lifestyle" that the wife is now demanding be maintained, etc.
But if so there ARE means for him to modify/change that -- credit/debt consolidation, bankruptcy, etc.

Dude this is the male version of when a female says 'if you leave me I'm going to kill myself'
Just pull yourself together and start to do shit you like doing. Most of it will be free - surfing, walking, art, whatever. Personally I cut down to a tiny home and now focus on not working and life is great

I'd have to say that I agree. The claim that "I can no longer afford to live" seems likely to be MORE than a bit specious. And then the (IMO overly) "dramatic" but yet VAGUE listing:
See that hidden little item there: "bills." That can cover a HOST of things -- things that OP is simply not wanting to be included in the "framed view" that is being presented. (More on this presently.\)
Because being "short $1000 a month" -- well that comes to $12,000 a year -- nearly 10% of his supposed annual GROSS salary, and most certainly more than 10% of his NET annual income. And that just DOESN'T ADD UP -- it DOESN'T make any sense.
IF he was claiming that his income/salary DROPPED (especially via some major decrease, cutback, layoff, etc) then it would be a different story -- but he's making NO SUCH CLAIM -- and absent that, the statement that his BASIC payments and "bills" are putting him that much in arrears... is simply not believable.
The "health insurance increase" well I can certainly see that THAT might be a major impact (especially the "family" policy) -- but OP doubtless has various "choices" there, especially in combination with the claimed "debts" that can dial that back (they might be difficult, even PAINFUL choices -- filing for bankruptcy for example to get rid of what are apparently "unsecured" debts -- but they ARE there).
-- * Meaning SOMETHING ELSE is "hidden" here, to wit... back to those "bills":
AND
Seems to me that OP is just SHITTY at managing his finances. And what exactly were all of those "worthless purchases" that created the additional "debt piled up" -- the BS about the wedding doesn't make sense, because (via "I got married and had kids." plus " Then last year she decided [to divorce-rape]") the "wedding" was a good 3+ years ago; and really, likewise with any OTHER "debts" accumulated during the marriage. (Any and ALL of that most certainly SHOULD have been taken into account/factored into the divorce, the division of assets, etc.)
And while it is POSSIBLE that OP was just soooo ignorant and innumerate that he simply "agreed" to ridiculously impossible alimony/child support... well it doesn't seem likely to me that the courts (as HORRIBLE as they tend to be) wouldn't have balked at such a thing.
-- Ergo I cannot help but think that -- buried within the "bills" -- is something else; some (or probably several) expensive habits (expeditures or even addictions?) that are ACTUALLY creating the over-the-top "in the red."
That's not saying he didn't get "misused/abused" by the ex-wife and system, it's simply saying that is NOT the entire "picture" here; something DOESN'T add up.
