Very interesting blog post about BMI and obesity that I found floating around the Internet. The study it sites as a source was mostly women (69%). They measured the actual body fat percentage to determine obesity rather than just a weight/height ratio. A few things it found:

29% of people with a normal BMI are obese

80% of people who are overweight according to their BMI are obese

Only 5% of those who are overweight and .2% of those who are obese according to BMI are ranked as such due to high muscle mass. So much for that excuse/male hamstering.

I have to edit this for the derpy crowd in this sub. BMI is a metric used to determine obesity in groups of people, and was never intended for individuals. Despite its assumed failings, BMI is used clinically because it's cheap and easy, and it doesn't take a medical degree to see that your patient isn't actually fat, just really muscular. However, it can be used for individual assessment with a fucking ~95% degree of accuracy. Read the article; only 5% of the study group were rated as overweight via BMI because of their muscle mass. Of course the 80% of men out here who are overweight will think they somehow fall into that 5% despite having not had any excersize since their highschool football days.
