I wish I never watched Anna Akana as a naive teen. I didn't have any older female role models to give me advice or guide me, so like most kids do, I looked online for it. I thought she was so amazing and modern and funny, and the fact that she was Asian like me made her even more relatable, but looking back she just gave awful advice. She encourages women to cater to men (like this video where she puts women down in order to gain male acceptance), and follow the sex positive movement. She made a video about how girls should ask guys out, and because it was received with so much positivity in the comments section and how it was viewed as such a feminist and modern thing to do, I followed her advice! Her advice got me nowhere except embarrassment because I was so damn desperate for male attention and validation. She encouraged women to engage in casual sex if they want to because "empowerment!" but she said that she couldn't because she can't do hookups. I wonder how many other young girls heeded her terrible advice.

So she felt "panic" when her date joked about wedding dresses, then realized she herself often makes those jokes. But instead of thinking "Oh haha, I joke about this all the time so my date must also be joking," she goes the other way and thinks "Men are completely validated, my date and women who may or may not be joking are the literal devil."
