Substance abuse, anything beyond recreational or occasional use, equals low value traits.
I don’t care nowadays anymore if we are talking about alcohol, weed, gambling or any other chemicals abuse, as ALL of them do have an effect on the mental health and capability of a partner to process through emotional discomfort in a healthy way.
It goes both ways: I don’t want to use a chemical crotch to “help” me through emotional draining times and expect from a partner the same.
Over the years I have witnessed and experienced the mental capabilities of substance abusing men who are on an emotional intelligence of a potato. They drag you into their rabbit hole of guilt and shame. Blame you for their incapabilities of dealing with conflicts in a self-reflecting way.
If a man promises you to stop taking whatever he is taking, he will start because of you again.
I dated a man who told me he uses weed on a recreational level which turned out to be a few times a week on a regular basis. He is more than welcome to fog his brain out but I know that lighting up one and being as high as a kite does not leave you grounded and takes away the chance to feel your feelings and work through them.
Men who numb out their feelings and don’t work on themselves, blame you that you are too much maintenance and not chill, kick them to the kerb.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a glass of wine, or a bottle of beer, but I do strongly believe that numbing out your feelings regularly does only work in the short run and you will suffer the consequences in the longterm.
If your man is abusing any substance, think twice if you want to start dating him. Think hard about staying with him if he decides to stop taking whatever he consumes, the road of HIS recovery will be traumatising for you on top of the trauma you have experienced already.
Substance abusing men are selfish, put themselves first, have a low emotional intelligence (as they numb out bad feelings instead of processing and working through them), and will NEVER stop because of you.
Take care of you Queens, and don’t help men who are addicted.
