I come from Eastern Europe. Discovering FDS made me realize how horrible my situation was growing up. My father retired at 45 thanks to a legal loophole and my pick me mother goes to work still at 55 and cooks/cleans. He was emotionally, financially and physically abusive towards us and as a kid I begged her to leave him, but she is codependent and can't be without a man.
Both my parents shamed and abused me if I was not as thin or non argumentative or feminine as they wanted and excused an extremely abusive cheating older ex I had at 22 by constantly giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Looking back, I was conditioned to accept horrible behaviors from men. I went to therapy and with my therapist we discussed about unspoken messages from my family and mine definitely was "without a man you are nothing".
I am now childfree and divorced, which is a source of contempt and passive aggressive comments from my father and I am secretly saving up money to move away from them with a friend. I feel deep shame and anger at the rampant misogyny in my extended family, women are seen as having only one path: look good, marry and serve a man, have children, work while raising them (he sits around) and be in constant contact with your (often abusive) family who meddles with your life.
I want to thank you for this subreddit that offers an invaluable perspective, you help me crawl out of the pit.
Ladies from different cultures, was there misogyny in your home/culture and how has that affected you?
Thank you
