Find some hobbies. They don’t have to be you going out of the house or doing random things you don’t like. Just find something that makes you happy. Bonus points if you can get it to make you money or help you in another aspect of life.

Take yourself out to lunch, talk to an older male mentor, watch your favorite movie, go lift some weights. Happy bday

Stop celebrating your birthday. It was nice when you were a kid, but as an adult it doesn't mean shit. Everyone was born. You can use Adam Carolla's idea and pick a major accomplishment, then celebrate that once a year until you do something even greater.

Go find a trail in the mountains or forest preserve near you and go for a long run/hike. Really helps clear the mind and gets the endorphins flowing. Get some sun light and Vitamin D.

Shitty family? That sounds awful. I do hope this is just a one-time thing. At times some family members just behave like assholes due to some issues. These can feell exaggerated if you are depressed. If not, then the good news here is you are 20. Depends on your education, debt and exact location, get financially independent first, then get out of that family.

The best moment in my life so far was my first job. I was financially independent and don't need that abusive parents to drag me down into the emotional hellhole.

Welcome to 20 years old, brother.

I came from a household with a father who yelled. Early on it really got to me. It seemed no matter how hard we tried with our chores it was never to his liking. One day we decided to do more than just our chores and cleaned the entire house from top to bottom, the kind our mother would make us do once or twice a year for spring cleaning. When we finished our father yelled at us. We didn't do anything wrong or poorly, we just didn't do enough. We had made the house better of our own free will to try and please him and it angered him.

That was when we realized that we weren't the problem, he was. After that things around the house become much more nice because it gave us a sort of freedom. If he was going to yell at us regardless and we didn't actually do anything wrong, then there was no wrong to be done. We'd stand and let him yell, then we'd just go back to our business. It had no actual power over us anymore.

For others, this can be hard to compartmentalize though. You may know that your fathers yelling shouldn't effect you but it still can, especially the actual physical act of it as it can be distracting. I never felt happier than I did when I moved out and turned my back on that family. It may be more difficult for you as you need the security he provides to finish your schooling, but working with that in mind and learning to detach from it all is the key.

Find something you love to do that gets you out of the house and go do it. I would also find somewhere else to study like a library or a park. Sometime when I'm stuck in my head I like to go do something nice like pick up trash at a place I like to go.

This may seem harsh but here's the best advice I can offer: LEAVE HOME.

Sounds like you're attending university so it may be tough, but at 20 years old, you are definitely old enough to be independent and supporting yourself. Living in your parents' home isn't making you happy? You're over 18, the universal age of adulthood. Go live somewhere else and support yourself. Or at least start making plans to do it. When life sucks, i like to do research and make plans for how I'm going to improve my situation. Having a plan and a clear way forward usually makes me feel less depressed. Actually putting that plan into action makes me feel awesome.
