My dad always says he doesn't care about father's day and not to spend our money on him, but the moment we called him on father's Day and he just had to subtly bring up his wrist to show us he was wearing the watch we bought him begs to differ

Same type of people who - when men point out that there aren't really any days dedicated to celebrating men while there are literally dozens dedicated to celebrating women - will claim that "every day is men's day" and that "men just can't handle a single day not being focused on them".

I'm not sure why people get so protective or upset about these days. An ex-girlfriend of mine and I were single parents and used to, and still do, wish each other happy mothers or fathers day regardless of whose day is supposed to be. It's not really a competition and if somebody pulls double duty that doesn't offend me at all.

I think her comment could also be read (and i believe it should) as a regret to not have a father for their children on this day (it's weird to not have a father to celebrate) rather than some kind of jealousy or a will to downgrade father's day.

It is awkward for single mums because what do you tell your kid when the dead beat dad doesn't want to see him that weekend as he has a new family? Or his dad beat you both? Or is dead? Or one of thousand or possible reasons the day is hard got a single mum to help their child through.

I just put together why I hate this and it is one of the only things on this subreddit I’ll always disagree with.

Imho, especially a when a child is still young, it’s not about parents. It’s about kids doing cute things for their parents. If people say XXX day isn’t for mother’s/fathers then kids of single parents feel like they can’t celebrate that day.

Growing up with a single mom I was one of 3 kids in my 2nd grade class living without a dad, and the only kid who never saw their dad. We made presents for both holidays, I listened to my friends talk about what their dad would like (we were making coupon books shaped like car keys), but I never gave the Father’s Day present to anyone and apparently, it affected me enough to still remember it 2 decades later. (I have an advanced degree in education, I’ve taught in classrooms, and was very aware that some of my kids didn’t have two, or any, parents either, so whenever we had permission slips or anything I always said “please give this to your adult at home”)

Tl;dr: I agree that people can feel whatever they feel about parents days, but at the end of the day the child is what makes a parent a parent, and if they feel wrong or excluded for only having 1 or no parents, then that’s when I start having issues.
