The routine operation performed on baby boys in North America today is recognized as medically unnecessary surgery. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recognizes that any "potential benefit" is insufficient to recommend routine circumcision. We'll see that link in a minute.

Routine circumcision is the act of taking a healthy, living, functional baby and undergoing surgery without medical necessity:

The baby is not sick. The baby does not have any birth defects. But a part of the body is cut off with this surgery. And some of those babies die.

In other words, each of those 100-200 deaths was 100% preventable. Every one of those babies should be alive today. As I have joked before:

The female equivalent to circumcision would be removing the clitoral hood only.

An awful lot of FGM involves hacking the clitoris out. It's specifically done to remove sexual pleasure in women so they won't cheat. You see it a lot in cultures where men spend a lot of time absent (warring, herding, trading).

The equivalent in men would be snipping the glans off. Circumcision, as it is, just lowers sensitivity a little. There are some papers that compare adults before and after.

I don't approve of MGM either, btw. Fucking barbaric mutilation of an unconsenting infant. Last time I checked the numbers it caused over 100 infant deaths in the USA per annum from complications.

Use the term mutilation for both. Don't sugarcoat it.

I was watching a show on BBC I think and the presenter who was circumcised as a baby was doing all the ethical ins and out of who would and why. Even brought his father in to talk about it. The general consensus he left with was that if it wasn't don't properly in hospital they would go underground and put the kids at more risk. And all I can think is then there needs to be a way to stop it. Make example of every parent who mutilated their child..

one Jewish woman said there is a joke between pregnant Jewish women that says I hope you get a girl.. for this reason alone is testament to the trauma they have to put the child through.

Then there was a black woman who wanted her sons tacle snipping because its more asceticly pleasing she said.. I mean thats OK is it..

My own cousin is half Jewish and was taken to a Jewish man in his house who did the mutilation. He ended up going to the hospital for corrective surgery.

This day and age its kind of horrific. FGM is a horrible thing but removing the foreskin isn't mutilation??

Public hospitals don't make circumcisions to male babies, not out of ethics, but out of laziness and red tape

Private hospitals instead... well, you have to insist to nurses and doctors that you don't want to get your baby mutilated.

Im genuinely curious, while i do support this sub a lot for the most part, one thing that ive always been curious about is circumcision. Why do people hate it so much? Like whats bad about it? Ive never really understood why people call it genital mutilation, and while i dont think you should always circumcise your child because its beneficial to their health or whatever, i also dont think its that bad of a thing to do, however i dont know much about the topic. If someone could explain to me why people think it should be illegal or its mutilation, etc, thatd be nice, cause i want to understand where youre all coming from.
