Had something similar.. a high school acquaintance of my wife showed up on our doorstep, with her baby and husband wanting to stay with us. I've never seen these people before in my life, and my wife was at work so I wouldn't let them in the house..
We found out later they had already abused the hospitality of their families and friends on both sides. and had been tossed out, so they were left with nowhere to go. My wife comes home and we discuss and she decides due to the baby she will pay for a hotel for the night so they at least have somewhere to go since I still refuse entry to our home (Yes I'm that guy)
They pile into the wife's car, she hits a drive through and buys them all a meal, she pays as they claim to have zero money. Husband asks to stop at the gas station and comes back out with beer and cigarettes. My wife drops them at hotel and pays because she is way to nice and already said she would, but is fuming at this point. S.O.B. claims broke, can't feed or house family, but then has money for beer and smokes.
Last time we ever saw them, no loss as far as I'm concerned, and I believe my wife feels the same way.

I've seen so many dudes with needles in their neck. I think I saw my first one in 2002. Have no idea if they were dead or not, probably not. But it's crazy when you first see it. Then you see someone shooting in their penis and it's not so crazy anymore. The DTES is just like that. When you think you've seen it all you see something else thats crazy. Sorry, DTES is the Vancouver Downtown East Side. A real hive of scum and villiany. Nastiest neighbourhood in Canada by far. I think Americans call it skid row.
An SRO is a Single Room Occupancy hotel or flop house. It basically means it's a tiny room you rent with the money you get from welfare. Which is fuck all so the places are nasty as hell. Crime ridden, bed bug and roaches, and everyone is pretty much a low life junky so they vary wildly in personal safety too. Lots of junkies prefer living on the street to living in some of those SROs. Either because their too fucked up and unsafe or because the rules are too strict.
And by too strict I mean, you can't be actively doing crimes like prostitution and dealing out of your room.
