I'm glad you had the courage to stand up to your colleague. Good for you.

Now, if you were just posting to solicit moral support, do yourself a favor and stop reading here.

If, on the other hand, you are open to some constructive criticism, I have some a couple of observations I would like to share with you:

1)

Your comment that she "knows how to pick them" was *also* anti-male. And perhaps even more damaging to the men involved than what your colleague said.

In suggesting that the woman's experiences were due to her partners' inherent nature, you bypassed discussion of the much more plausible scenarios for why "lightning struck twice" with this particular woman.

-She could have just made the abuse up. It is not rare for someone who makes false allegations to have multiple targets.

-It is also not rare for domestic violence to be reciprocal. If she is aggressively provoking her partners, of course both of them will fight back.

-Since it sounds like she was two-timing, wouldn't some degree of anger be understandable? Two wrongs don't make a right, but if these guys both had a violent outburst when they found out about the other, we can't really write them off as just a bad apples. We all might have done the same thing under the circumstances.

2)

Perhaps this is nitpicky, but in telling your story, you called out the gender of the two colleagues you were speaking to. In particular, you classified the second speaker as male. Why? The comment could just as easily have come from a female, and his behavior did not subvert any harmful stereotypes.

An reader unsympathetic to men could use this as an excuse to interpret the story as an example of "toxic masculinity" or "patriarchy hurts men" or whatever. Or to just dismiss it altogether because no particular woman did anything wrong.

To be clear, I don't think you need to go to the other extreme and talk like some sort of robot in an attempt to conceal gender, either. Just use he's and she's normally, and reserve the adjectives male and female for when they are relevant to the point you are making.
