On the one hand, I don't care too much about this particular character being played by a woman. The fact that The Doctor regenerates with a new personality and, as far as appearance goes, visibly different genetics, at least opens up the possibility of regenerating as a woman or as a different race.

But what I strongly object to is the PC virtue-signalling that the BBC wraps around its choice of actor. The advert with a shattering glass ceiling. The "It's About Time" slogan. The way it continually pats itself on the back for pandering to feminists. It's typical BBC and it stinks.

Yeah, I saw them change the gender to female and I think you are right in that they are pandering to the sjw crowd. This fits in nicely with their tagline "The past, the present and the future have always been female". That tagline is why I no longer watch that channel.

I think anyone who says this knows nothing of the man who made this gender swap for the Doctor possible, Steven Moffat. He admitted after it was announced that he was leaving at the end of Series 10 that the way he wrote "Curse of the Fatal Death" was a template he used when he took over as showrunner, and that Comic Relief spoof ended with the Doctor being a woman back in the 1999 with ideas he'd been working on for years. Moffat did so many things to set up something he thought would be cool, not progressive, for the series since he watched it as a kid.

The progressive bullshit you're seeing is what the people in charge of the show now are doing, but the change itself isn't it.

The Doctor was originally a man in his fifties or sixties, the young ones look weird to me.

They have all been ~~English~~ British, that is a big part of the show but there is no theoretical reason for it, it could change.

I vote for French next because I like the sound of the language and now we have nice high resolution screens subtitling is so much easier to read than it used to be.

Has there been a black Doctor yet?

I don't see how maleness is an essential part of the character.

What previous stories would need any rewriting to swap the gender of Teh Doctor? Only one bit immediately comes to mind, the relationship with the opposite-sex sidekick. So either that character gets left female so we can explore how that changes the dynamic, or it is changed to a male so we keep the oppositeness. They could alternate each character change.

Hey, they can both be gay males! Or gay females. There is time for everything, and the universe is full of new jimmies to rustle. I like to see new stuff.

It is a character with built in mechanic to change to a completely different person so it works with the story, it is clear that their motivation is to attract a particular demographic.

Look at all those men praising the show and one woman which is great except a lot of women watched that show and the doctor was seen as a sex symbol to a lot of those women.

Characters have changed gender a few times. The master became Missy and if I remember correctly one of the high Galifreyen military personnel went from a old bald white man to a young bald black woman. A few years ago during Matt Smith's run it was mentioned that timelords can change gender. The episode if I remember correctly was the one where the TARDIS was given a body of a woman.

I love how OP asks an open question, and anyone who doesn't give the expected answer is being downvoted.

To tell you the truth, I really don't give a fuck. I am a progressivist in all art. I don't care if you take Mozart's work and turn it into dubstep, just like I don't care if you take one of Sophocles' plays and turn them into a sitcom. In fact, I support all kinds of innovation and fusion in every form of art. If you want to do a retelling of Julius Caesar's story as a gangsta nigga from the ghetto, do it, it could be interesting. If you want to turn Indiana Jones into a woman, do it, she already has a female sounding name. If the result is good, I'll like it. If it sucks, I'll dislike it. That's all I care about. In the old days, male actors used to play female characters in theatre. So fucking what? Art has no boundaries.

If this actress can really pull off playing Doctor Who, why stop her? If she was merely chosen as a token for political reasons, then she'll suck, and the end result will reflect that choice. If she's good, why do you care, aside from a misguided sense of ownership towards the franchise?
