A lot of ~~progressive~~regressive types seem to be all too happy to embrace guilty until proven innocent. Sadly our society failed to instill in them the respect for and understanding of the importance of the presumption of innocence.

It is almost as though they forgot that one of the strongest arguments against the death penalty which was one of their rally calls of old was specifically this. How can we in good conscience sentence people to death when we know that people are falsely sentenced for crimes they did not commit. If you cannot be certain you should always err on the side of caution.

Good on you for powering through a terrible life experience and keeping your objectivity and humanity through it.

By the way, the 2% number is an unsourced quote from a Susan Brownmiller book which has been cited back and forth so many times that it's now just part of the feminist stew. It's not from a study, or from crime statistics of any sort. It appears to be made up, since she's been asked about it since and failed to provide any attribution.

Reminds me of this dark comedy where one of the characters was a female poet and lyricist who often wrote about feminism and rape, but kept yelling at herself because she had never been raped and didn't know anything about it. It turned into wanting to be raped, so she could write about it better. Not far from the truth.

By all means, if you know these people, ask them if they're okay. Shine a light on them. Question what's happening in their life to make them this way. Don't let them talk about the rest of the world; make it about them and what they're going through. You will often find that their life is privileged and dull and they simply want to fight something because it's self-serving.
