So I come from a generally hard left family, and I used to be hard left myself, but lately, things have gotten out of hand and it's starting to cause friction on a big scale.
It seemed to start when my sister went to university to study English Literature. Around that same time, she started her current relationship, which has lasted several years now.
Now, I really like my sister, and I really like her boyfriend. They're cool people, really friendly, chilled out and all that good stuff. Except...
Except when I talk politics with them.
My sister never used to be like this. I don't know about her boyfriend, I didn't know him before they started dating. But something changed when she went to university and started dating him, and it's changed my whole family.
I didn't really spot anything was up until a couple of years back. Me and my family have always gotten along great, and we still do for the most part, but as soon as politics comes up, everything sours. My sister and her boyfriend have gotten HARDCORE into feminism and hard left politics, and it's rubbed off on my parents. Those things in themselves I don't care that much about, they're harmless, well intentioned things as far as I'm concerned, but it's the INTENSITY with which they've gotten into it that worries me.
We're now at a point where political discussions with my family inevitably descend into a shouting match because I don't agree with them.
The latest round was last night. My sister's boyfriend and I got into one because we were watching a political debate show and the topic of the gender pay gap came up. I made a comment about how there's no evidence to suggest it's a function of oppression, rather a function of lifestyle choices. Probably a bad comment to make around him.
Well, you would think I had just advocated gassing the jews with how he reacted.
I got the full browbeating shouting match. Everything from how I as a white man don't know what women go through, let alone black women (I don't know why he brought race into it, I never said anything about race), and when I asked for evidence to support the pay gap? Holy shit! I'm asking for evidence???
"You don't need evidence!"
At that point my dad intervened. On my sister's boyfriend's side.
My opinions were apparently "worrying".
I was "boring" people with my opinions.
My dad at least attempted to find some evidence to back up the gender pay gap and his presumed reasons for it.
He didn't find any, but that didn't change his position. My opinions were still "worrying" and I was "going on about it". Apparently I "sound like Trump". I don't like Trump, I have never given any indication that I like him, but to them, sharing one opinion is as good as kissing his arse.
I then got the talk about how I'm struggling to be as socially successful as my sister because I have these "worrying" opinions and I need to "be careful" what I say around people.
I had to sit there and listen to my own parents browbeat me because I didn't agree with my sister and her boyfriend. Because my opinions are "worrying" and I must be getting "bad influences" from somewhere.
...I'm 28.
...My sister and her boyfriend are 2 years younger than me.
I work full time, feed myself, drive myself to work and back every day, and pay £200+ a month in rent to my parents. Not much at all, I know, but...
How much rent do my sister and her boyfriend pay? £0.
They are two people, and they have a dog. Neither own a car, and require constant lifts to their part time jobs in a café and a woodworking shop respectively, on top of my parents and I consistently having to look after their dog whenever it's inconvenient for them to do it.
Apparently this passes as fair to my parents.
I decided last night I would no longer discuss politics with my family.
Somewhere along the line I lost my family to some kind of cult that disqualifies me from discussing politics with them because my views don't match theirs. Because what I think is "worrying" and will apparently leave me a social outcast.
It never used to be like this. I used to be able to talk to my parents about ANYTHING.
I still like my parents a hell of a lot, I still like my sister a hell of a lot. Hell, I still like her boyfriend. But something has gone very wrong, and I don't know what to do.
I'm being treated like a petulant, misguided, incapable child.
This is so fucked up.
But then what the hell can I do???
