Don't really know what to make of the article, or the issue of boobie streamers in general. Most of them do eventually get banned because they all end up pushing the revealing clothing too far. I found it amusing that she used the whole "sex sells" as a defense for these women when most feminists absolutely hate the fact that that's true. Plus of course she couldn't set aside her inner SJW and had to bring up cops shooting unarmed black people in an analogy that had no place in a gaming related article.

[–]mwobuddy 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Be interesting and good at something, rather than going on sex appeal? No......

LegendaryLea has been soft banned multiple times now for "accidentally" flashing her audience and still makes money hand over fist. As long as the company profits from it they have an incentive to turn a blind eye to it. I have no problem with people making a living with this and companies profiting from it, but they should be honest about it.

[–]historyismybitch 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If they were honest about what they were doing I probably wouldn't care either. But like trophy wives, they will never admit that it's just about the money.

Cleavage streams have really fallen off in the last couple years for the games I regularly watch. Even Russian gamer grrls are pretty modest nowadays in the 500+ viewers range.

I don't watch League of Legends, though, which was always the worst offender.

Because it got so bad twitch had to make rules about it. It got to the point where you'd go to certain popular games and have no issues finding 5+ women streaming in their underwear with the cams taking up 25% or more of the screen.

My friend legitimately once linked me to a day old twitch profile like that with 2k viewers playing lol on a lvl 3 account and losing.

It was almost like the actual camwhores found out they'd make more money playing videogames on twitch.

The article didn't even touch what IMO is the biggest argument againsts "boobie streamers" and that is integrity and fairness. Gaming is still becoming established, and I and many others of the gaming community wish that it would become a respected sport like chess, and even become popular enough to be shown on tv. But if you lookup a popular "gaming athlete" and assume this is one of the best, and you happen to choose legendary lea, you'd right it off as a gimmick for the viewing pleasure of pervs. Streamers like her do incredible damage to the integrity of gaming and its advancement.

Secondly is fairness. Imagine you're a pro golfer, you go to the course every day for practice, you send dozens of hours perfecting every swing with every club, and do this for months or years on end. You go to a tournament and face off against a girl who barely knows which end of the club to hold, and apparently also doesn't know how to put on a shirt. You play golf, ending 10 under while she's 60 over. Now it's time to hand out the score cards to the audience to rate who was sexier. You lose the match. All those thousands of hours of practice outranked by someone who felt like showing some skin that day. That is exactly the situation in gaming.

streaming isn't really about ability or video game skills.

It absolutely is for male streamers.

[–]thatusenameistaken 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Not in all cases, or people like Pewdiepie and the Yogscast wouldn't have such huge followings. It's about entertainment, and not all of the streaming audience has the same interests. I can't that screaming idiot and the Yogscast guys are sometimes really entertaining and sometimes infuriating. I watch some of their videos a lot, but not because any of them are remotely skilled.

[–]lasciate 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Do they stream on Twitch? I can't remember the last time I saw a low-skill guy topping out there. Maybe Overwatch in Beta? Again, I don't watch every game.

Edit: If they're on Youtube that's a different beast entirely.

I watch Dota 2, CS:GO, Hearthstone, and (rarely) Overwatch, which are all consistently in the top 6 games. There are no low-skill male streamers for the first three on the first page of listings (by #viewers) for those games unless there's a charity/celebrity stream going on.

You can build up a core fanbase and probably even make a living off subs/donations while being bad yet entertaining, but you won't pull in big viewer numbers or become very popular.

[–]thatusenameistaken 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The yogscast at least streams a shitload on twitch.

Exactly, it's overt 'cheating' with something not related to the performance, knowledge or anything. It's not modeling, looks should have fuck all to do with popularity as a gamer.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The women who are doing it are fulfilling a demand that men want. Get men to stop wanting it and supporting it. This is a male problem, not a female one.

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not a demand men want, it's a demand underage boys want as that is the majority of the audience. Granted they don't make up the majority of the donations but they still give in the form of ad revenue.

[–]Flowman 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand the problem. They are clearly fulfilling a market want. Guys like looking at attractive women and are presumably willing to pay for it.

From my standpoint, everyone involved wins.

[–]lasciate 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Male streamers used to be able to stream shirtless. Twitch changed the rules to stop this, but female streamers are still allowed to push the boundaries with plunging necklines and push-up bras. It's like a Latin newscast sometimes.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

the problem is fucking hypocrisy that's what. if bitches would stop crying then they can do whatever they want. they don't get their cake and eat it too. fuck that shit. if an artist cant draw a bitch showing her ass in tights, then bitches in real life better not fucking get to make money off of cleavage.

[–]lasciate 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You keep saying "bitches"? Do you mean women/girls?

[–]Krissam 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, he means the people who are bitching.

[+]mwobuddy -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, losers. Just use porn.

[–]AVAtistar 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

why? who is being forced here?

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

strawwoman.

[–]bigoted_bill 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

As a nerd, there is nothing worse then a girl getting more credit as a gamer based on her looks over her skills. Shameful exploitation to get fake internet points and feed their inflated little minds.

[–]Volkrisse 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

most of the time its not fake internet points, its donations, tips, cheers?, sponsorships etc. They aren't good or even competent in the game. This obviously isn't true in all cases, there are TONS of female gamers who really are that good and deserve the benefits (going pro) without the stigma of she slept to the top.

[–]bigoted_bill 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

makes me even more angry.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ya I hate see that so much I tend to just avoid female streamers with face cams.

[–]unpicked-username 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here, take my fake internet point!

[–]Zizuirl 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why I feel twitch is the porn hub of gaming. Nobody there has skill in gaming. Just marketing.

[–]omegaphallic 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't see this as a Men's Rights issue and I couldn't care aless if they're milking their sex appeal for profit while playong video games.

They us not adapt the neo victorian attidudes of the feminists.

[–]idontkowmyself 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

my thing is they fucking suck at the games.lol. if they didnt it would be less offensive but the fact that they are absolute trash with no personality boils my blood tbh

[–]BruceCampbell123 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't exactly understand the issue that this author is trying to address.

The women on these twitch channels are doing this, not because they feel forced or compelled, because they want to. They know what they have and they use it.

So what's really the issue here? Are we trying to defy the laws of attraction? Do we want women to stop showing off their bodies (no one wants that)? Do we want men to stop finding women attractive? "This needs to stop" Why? I think the market will sort itself out. People that want to actually watch good gamers streaming high level gaming will go to those channels. People who want to watch a girl with big boobs play a game and having fun will find those channels as well.

[+][deleted] -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

It seems futile for nerds to complain about women playing out a nerd fantasy - an attractive girl you surprisingly find in your normally solitary or male-only space, a girl who overlooks your conventional unattractiveness, who's fascinated by your gigantic brain, and who you can imagine building a relationship with on the basis of shared interests in abstruse hobbies.

[–]bufedad 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Umm.. what? Gaming is a solitary or male-only space?

You do realize that neither of those is true. That neither of those has been true for over a decade.

[–]AtemAndrew 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Even originally it wasn't true. Pac Man, for instance.

[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's true, but gaming at home games were originally a solo act (or at best two player). It's only in the past 2 decades that we've seen multiplayer online games rise as the standard.

Edited: For clarity.

[–]AtemAndrew -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

True, but that has nothing to do with female gamers as a whole. Many games were effectively gender-neutral as well.

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many games were gender-neutral, but most gamers (in the early days were men, and were solo).

In the past decade, the space is pretty evenly divided, and most of the gaming is multiplayer online with strangers from around the country/globe.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

in my experience, women don't like men due to shared interest. it's all due to level of attractiveness, not necessarily physical. so a girl liking games in no way gives you a better chance at getting her.
