Viagra is considered "Optional", some plans do indeed cover it. Most do not.

As for birth control. Under Obamacare. Health insurers must provide every form of female birth control that exists. With the only exception being abortion. Obamcare does not require health insures to provide any form of male birth control. Not even vasectomies. nothing. or to quote directly from the ObamaCare website

What Birth Control Is Covered?

According to HealthCare.Gov Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods prescribed by a woman’s doctor are covered. This generally includes:

-Barrier methods (used during intercourse), like diaphragms and sponges

-Hormonal methods, like birth control pills and vaginal rings

-Implanted devices, like intrauterine devices (IUDs)

-Emergency contraception, like Plan B® and ella®

-Sterilization procedures

-Patient education and counseling

Plans aren’t required to cover:

-Drugs to induce abortions

-Services related to a man’s reproductive capacity, like vasectomies

ObamaCare covers all forms of female birth control that exists, except abortion. But on the other hand excludes all forms of male birth control. Not even vasectomy. It is required to pay for tubal ligation. The female equivalent of a vasectomy. Despite the fact that tubal ligation is more expensive than a vasectomy.

The (I presume insurance?) companies who don't want to pay for hormonal contraceptives are just trying to save money. Remember that similar insurance companies in different sectors do the same thing. Here in the UK, some home insurance companies don't want to pay for flood damage (which there can be quite a lot of here because it rains all the fucking time), and so sometimes people can't get payouts when their house has been flooded and needs repairs etc.

This is an amoral and dodgy process, but it is not out of any sexism or evil, it's out of greed for money. The same thing happens with all insurance. My dad used to have health insurance, but they wormed out of paying when he got ill and used some loophole or technicality in the Terms.

A similar thing will be happening with those health insurance companies. I strongly suspect that they will offer to pay for hormones for medical reasons (abnormally intense periods, for example), but they can use technicalities to worm their slimy arses out of paying for contraception because it is not a health/medical issue. Also, hormonal contraceptives are expensive.

But that same technicality CAN'T be used for ED. They would most likely use it if they could, but ED is a diagnosed medical problem. As they are health/medical insurance they have to cover medical problems. Periods are not a medical problem, they are the normal healthy state. In the cases where it is horribly painful or irregular or with complications, I would expect (although I don't know for sure) they would have to pay.

So you can see the devil is in the detail. And, as so often is the case, money is the likely motive and legal wormery the likely means. I absolutely am NOT supporting or excusing these greedy practices, I'm just explaining them.

For the UK, which I know a lot more about, it is entirely different. The NHS here will PAY for breast enhancement (and not just for mastectomy patients, they will actually pay for it for healthy outpatients, or at least they used to). Almost any procedure seems to be free although the quality is quite terrifying to be honest. You can easily go in a bad NHS hospital with a broken hip and come out in a box - but that's off topic now. Needless to say there are free hormone pills, implants, IUDs of both copper or plastic-with-hormones types and injections available to women. Men can get vasectomy for free I think (not sure) but have to pay for condoms.

TL;DR - Contraception is technically NOT a health/medical issue, it does not need to be covered by insurance and could be considered an 'extra perk' when it is. ED is technically a medical condition and so must be covered by medical insurance. It's all about definitions, being specific, and using loopholes to save money.

If I was a crazy lawyer I'd go after male reproductive rights based on the 14th amendment using the argument that simply based on biology you can't simply leave a father's name off of the birth certificate. I would use the argument that it's discrimination based on biology and since the father doesn't carry the child he's being denied basic parental rights. This would be the beginning of male reproductive rights as it would make equal custody a legal right from the outset.

Since Safe Haven laws are based on the fact that the mother has automatic custody, the father now has open to him the same channel of denial of parental rights as a mother has since he is also a legal parent.

I've often wondered if shared parenting and father's rights arguments could also be made using the 9th Amendment creatively.

The 9th says "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

....which basically is saying, hey we haven't thought of everything in the Bill of Rights so anything else one could construe as a natural right is also protected. I think you could make the argument that the right to be a parent to your child without the interference of the government is one of these basic natural rights.

I think this part of the men's rights movement needs to change focus and sort of accept the fact that women get to choose who gets into the world and in many ways we have to deal with that. But our argument should be -- and very strongly -- if we have to deal with you then you have to deal with us. Father's rights to us is like reproductive rights to you and we demand equality. Fatherhood is not the curse. Children are not the curse -- it's the machine of the state and the absolute power it gives to mothers that is the curse.
