By the same token that the gender pay gap can be explained by female choice, can't the feminization of the education system be explained by male choice?

A woman taking a high-flying career might make her seem less appealing to men seeking a SAHM, but no less appealing to everyone else who doesn't mind (or prefers) dual-income households (or even female breadwinner households).

Conversely, a man taking a teaching job at the lower levels (kindergarten, elementary, high school) even outside the pedophilia hysteria, is seen as someone without much ambition, and his prospects lower as a husband, compared to others who favor career.

In short, society is putting large incentive for men to earn more, and has no lack-of-incentive for women to earn more except the same one men face (lack of contact with kids, too busy).

Absolutely. We can't force men to go into education as we can't force women into other fields (although they shouldn't be dissuaded from going into education either, through, for example, accusations of pedophilia; but that is another subject...).

The problem comes with teachers (particularly female teachers) treating female students better than the male students (eg. higher marks for the same ability). This is what we want to get rid of in order to give everyone an equal opportunity to education, as is their right.

I think there should be an increased awareness about this (in society in general, but most importantly in groups where school is a part of their life : teachers, parents, students, etc.) in order to strike up a discussion about how to change this.

The comparison between this and the wage gap is not really correct. As you said, the wage gap comes from women choosing different jobs and careers than men, so naturally they are paid differently. This "education gap" doesn't come about from women's choice to go into teaching, but rather teachers taking away the choices of male students.

Why would any man in his right mind enter primary education? Even secondary? You risk your career and reputation all for a meager salary. Male teachers have to walk on eggshells in primary/secondary education.

So yeah, men make a choice not to enter. A choice not to take undue risk for little/no reward. But even if they did, I don't think you can say for certain that it'd turn around the trend of feminization.

Personally, I think we need more all-boy and all-girl schools (or classrooms at least). I think it's the best way to give kids the best learning environment. Let them have lunch and recess together, but break them up for learning time.

This is a legit question and indeed not that wrong.

But one could argue that women earn less based on thier own life choices, while boys in school have a disadvantage because of other mens life choices, since they can't chose their teachers. Women who chose to have a career that pays well, get as much money as men in the same job (actually irrelevan of their choice they get as much as men in the same job), while boys in school independent of their choices (or even their parents choices) get a disadvantage.

That means the mistake is that you can't equal a person to a group.

Of course there are other problems with biases of female teachers that seem to exist.

the education system inherently benefits girls, it caters to their learning styles.

Its obvious from day one males in education are failures, someone in a more suitable practice would own a business, etc. Its thought that if you're merely teaching it, you're not that great at it.

So its a hostile environment, doesn't benefit men in the long term, and doesn't work well with the drastic change men like to bring to their careers.

My personal story is that I wanted to be a social worker when I was considering study. Without any counter argument I believed that I wouldn't be able to provide for a family if I did that.

I became an engineer instead because I'm good at science. Hated the job and left it after getting depressed.

I went back and did a social work degree on top of my bachelors.

That 15 year old boy should have been told that he isn't the only one responsible for bringing the money in. It is even more true now that single women on average earn more than single men.

If the argument were "There's no male teachers and that's bad." That'd be male choice.

But male students don't get to choose to have overwhelmingly women teachers, and this actually effects the way they are treated.

This isn't true of many other professions.

I feel this is a very valid question to ask and there is a report from the Consortium for Policy Research in Education which postulates possible reasons for this. This report only focusses attention on the US and does record a disproportionate increase in female teachers compared to the overall increase in teachers.

In my view it gives unsatisfactory reasons for the reasons for the disproportionate amount of females v males entering teaching for example, more women entering the workforce.

I believe the report misses out on at least 2 important factors.

The very human element of fear of false accusations - just google news reports and teaching forums.
Women have now, for some time been the majority in Universities and post graduate teaching with support and bursaries available to them, though it must be said the UK government did at one point offer bursaries towards all genders to complete their PGSE - a mandatory post grad qualification, though I don't know if this still the case.

Whats worrying is not only the general silence about enticing males into teaching, but the general lack of focus on education of males

Create more all-boys schools.

Incentivize male teachers to work at the schools.

Hire retired men who actually attained successful careers as kind of adjuncts or guest lecturers to give students male role models to aspire to.

To some extent, it would seem so.

If society views men as more likely sexual offenders than women and they aren't, and men don't become teachers out of fear of sexism, then it would seem sexism plays a role.
