So I guess she never tried a domestic violence case for the millions of men every year that are abused by female spouses. A 2012 study showed that men were more likely to be victims of domestic violence and that 40% of severe violence was directed at men. Her small frame of reference does not add any degree of expertise to her statement.

Additionally, Whoopi is not advocating that men hit women who hit them first. Whoopi is not saying tit-for-tit or eye for an eye. She is saying no one should be hitting anyone else. And those who do hit should not expect a lack of retaliation.

It's sad that folks let their emotions get in the way of a very straight-forward issue.

Whoopi appreciates a few things in her statement.

1) Girls are educated to accept that men should be chivalrous, however, in an equal society Chivalry in it's literal sense is dead. Therefore the way a man acts should be how a woman acts. Aka hitting the opposite sex is not acceptable.

2) With this in toe women should accept in an equal society that if they hit out they get hit back, but this doesn't fully cover it, men who hit a women back in defence don't really use their full strength.

From the perspective of a man who can bench, leg press, dead-lift and pull up 100kg. I can tell you quite confidently if I or anyone who regularly lifts equivalent weight were to hay-maker anyone in the face it would put them down, but, that doesn't mean if my partner has had a rough day (which she has on occasion) and decides to lose her cool with me (which in any relationship will happen eventually), that it's ok to retaliate with my full strength...

Basically us men use reasonable force, if a man oversteps that boundary employing the attitude of "she deserves this" that to me is out of order. And moreover all on the man for overstepping. because he is guilty of overstepping, the force he used wasn't reasonable, but, that doesn't make the woman right for starting! And she definitely should be expecting retaliation of one form or another.

In short if the lass can complain about being hit back then take it as read that he pulled his punches.
