I left a comment on their facebook page. There's a few others calling them out.

The latest NZ crime and safety survey found that 4% of men and 6% of women experienced 1 or more incidents of partner violence in the previous 12 months. It also found that 17% of men and 14.4% of women were victims of coercive and controlling behavior (psychological abuse) by their partner. International studies have shown that half partner violence is reciprocal, with both partners being violent. In fact reciprocal violence is a good predictor of injury. Please stop talking about as if only violence against women matters. If we are going to solve this problem we need to address all victims and all perpetrators. ----- The study: http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2005.079020

Great response. It won't surprise you to know that the same saturated coverage went on all day this side of the ditch.

For me though, the thing is this: White Ribbon Day was always about violence against women, and arguments about violence against men just aren't going to get any traction on this day, no matter how factual and grounded in irrefutable fact they are. Besides, it's unarguable that some blokes batter their women.

The question, then, is: how do we get violence against blokes the same sort of coverage that White Ribbon Day has for women?

[–]occupythekitchen 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We stop pretending we care about violence against women. Seriously as a men if i do or say the wrong thing I can get sucker punched or jumped especially if I do so to the wrong woman. The primary victims of violence have always been males

[–]iainmf 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually I was just thinking about this, we could start by accusing them of hetronormative bias. I mean the whole 'men don't beat your woman' excludes LGBT people

[–]SigmundFloyd76 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Besides, it's unarguable that some blokes batter their women.

Where exactly are these "battered" woman? Serious question.

Where, in this day and age, is there a "bloke" who isn't acutely aware of the consequences of even raising his voice to a woman? I haven't met him.

I have witnessed a few actual incedents of domestic violence in my life and it was always woman attacking men who were too scared to even defend themselves. In fact, they all seemed more concerned with not being perceived as the aggressors than protecting themselves.

The tale of the frustrated man who comes home from work angry and takes it out on his wife for burning the toast just isn't accurate. Probably he exists, but he is exceedingly rare.

The fact of the matter is that there is no such thing as "violence against woman"; it's just regular violence that we all face. Humans are shit, but we're equal opportunity shit.

Don't despair, times are changing. In 10-20 years there will be no such thing as "violence against woman" and we're going to remove the term "science" from "social sciences".

[–]Revoran 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (12 children) | Copy Link

Here is my anecdotal evidence, from which I conclude that men rarely ever hit women

I'm just going to ignore the statistics linked above by /u/iainmf

Waaahhh the social sciences are not scientific

Are you fuckin' kidding me?

[–]occupythekitchen 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A man punchs another in the face and its a disagreement, a man slaps a woman and its attempted murder.

[–]Revoran 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't disagree that man on man, woman on man and woman on woman DV is often taken much less seriously than man on woman DV.

[–]SigmundFloyd76 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

Nope. I'm saying our perception of the prevalence of the rate at which woman are "battered" is seriously flawed.

My ex was abusive. She made a false accusation of DV as a tactic in a divorce settlement. As far as the "stats" are concerned; I am the abuser. The reality is that SHE was the violent one, not me. So in my case they got the stats 180o wrong; they mixed up the victim and the perp.

Erin Pizzey found that 62 of her first 100 clients at the first ever woman's shelter were "violence prone woman"; that is to say THEY were the primary aggressors. How many of those 62 are counted as "victims"? Every one of them.

I have a valid point. Have you ever actually met a woman who was the victim of non-reciprocal violence at the hands of a man? Certainly they exist, I just haven't actually met one in my 40 years. I know one woman who recently had to leave her "abusive" partner; but it turns out that the last THREE of her relationships were abusive. Not hard to see who's the violent one there.

So, no, not kidding. I'm saying that "violence against woman" is actually much more rare than society seems to believe.

Every day the Canadian CBC has a story about DV against woman or rape. It gives the false impression that it is really common. It's not.

So where are the battered woman? Does Ray Rice's wife count? And what about your "stats"? Are they from the same ideology as the 1 in 5 koss rape victim study?

[–]Revoran 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

First, I'm sorry your ex was such an abusive, lying piece of shit. That really sucks.

Yeah, I've met a woman who was the victim of non-reciprocal violence at the hands of a man. But that doesn't mean anything. Maybe she was the only one in the world. Maybe she was one of many. I don't know for sure because you can't trust anecdotal reports. People's stories are interesting, but we can't make big conclusions from them.

Imagine if 80% of taxi drivers in the country are Jewish and I just never meet one. This might be because I don't use taxis very often, or if I do use taxis a lot, it might be due to random chance that I never meet a Jewish driver. Maybe the taxi drivers just never mention their religion? Do I really ask every driver what their religion is?

That's why we look at statistics and surveys rather than just our own experiences.

Granted, /u/iainmf 's link doesn't work, so here is the study:

http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2005.079020

I have no idea whether it's biased or not. But let's actually take a look instead of swapping stories. It literally doesn't matter if you've never met a female victim or if I've never met a Jewish taxi driver.

[–]SigmundFloyd76 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I disagree. We're fed a story that just isn't true. Absolutely my observations matter. All of our observations matter.

Policy is written by humans. Does it matter if those humans have a flawed concept of reality? Does it matter that men are always treated as guilty when we know that at least half of the time they're statistically innocent?

You're playing some mental gymnastics when you say "just because we can't see doesn't mean it doesn't exist". Violence is NOT a gender issue and it's being portrayed as one. It matters.

never met a Jewish taxi driver.

Ok, but are we deluged with the message that all taxi drivers are Jewish? No. we're not. If we were, yet i'd never seen one, i't be perfectly reasonable to question it. Bad example.

[–]Revoran 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Violence is NOT a gender issue

You just said there weren't any battered women/they were very rare.

So violence is a gendered issue ... or it's not?

and it's being portrayed as one. It matters.

I agree that the way White Ribbon pretends violence is all male on female - that's wrong, yeah. Why do I think it's wrong? Because the best statistical data we have says it's wrong. The best data we have says that men are a significant amount of victims and women are a significant amount of perps, and that a lot of violence is reciprocal.

[–]SigmundFloyd76 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From the front page of /r/MensRights

The byline:

Report from Our Watch says stories about ‘salacious aspects of violence against women’ give the public a provocative but not representative perspective

This was what I was trying to say. As I assume you knew. Anyway.

[–]SigmundFloyd76 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Violence is not a gender issue. This means that it isn't simply about one gender abusing the other. I'm saying "violence against woman" is a misnomer It implies violence is gendered. It's a human issue. So we need to debate what "gender issue" means?

I'm saying the story of the woman beaten for burning the toast is very rare compared to public perception.

[–]Man-jusri 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you ever actually met a woman who was the victim of non-reciprocal violence at the hands of a man?

Yes. And the stories behind that violence are complicated, as is the overall issue of intimate partner violence.

[–]Tomppeli 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are both male and female serial batterers. Often they are psychopaths. Other people don't enjoy violence although hate move movements like feminism claim otherwise.

But the point is that the society doesn't think that female batterers really count. It's about deep undercurrents in the human psyche.

[–]Karma9999 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I have met battered women who are not responsible for violence directed their way, in fact my SO was previously married to an abuser. She is in no way aggressive or abusive, that she tolerates and supports my comments and actions regarding Men's Rights is always a surprise to me.

Feminists like to believe that men suffering DV do not exist, don't make the same mistake they do.

[–]Stevonz123 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks for that bro.

[–]iainmf 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

chur.

[–]the-tominator 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If so much domestic violence is reciprocal, then picking on men specifically will not reduce the numbers much, it may just convert some of the reciprocal violence into female-on-male violence. So yeah you're completely right.

[–]MasterZapple 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I see this all of the time, even in the descriptions of events held by our ministry of social affairs. At one point it is "growing a violence-free generation" and then it's suddenly "we need to stop gender based violence" and "violence against women is a horrible thing".

They erase all male victims so bloody smoothly. And then they have the balls to say "oh, but we totally care about male victims!" But they don't seem to realize, that male victims are erased PRECISELY because

"domestic violence" == "gender based violence" == "violence against women"

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It grates every time I see it. Lets stop violence against women. They could have suggested stopping violence but they chose to specifically single out women and excluded everybody else in that statement. Violence against children? Not worth mentioning. Violence against gays? Nope. Stopping violence isn't the objective at all, quite the opposite. The aim is to enable abuse. The message is that a woman can be as agressive and violent as she wants and nobody should do anything to defend themselves.

[–]double-happiness 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's pretty sexist if you think about it, because it's conflating 'women' with 'domestic'.

[–]ParaBDL 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

White Ribbon day in Australia actually states it's fighting violence against women and not domestic violence.

[–]JRPGFan 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In everyday life we all see more women hitting men than the reverse, why don't the masses call bullshit on "Stop Violence Against Women" campaigns?

[–]Paladin327 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because if anyone calls bullshit on something that primarily helps women, it generally won't end well.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The white ribbon campaign will not help women though. By pushing men further and further, it will probably INCREASE male on female violence and by giving women (implied by default) carte blanche to effect violence against men, it will also increase f on m violence.

[–]blueoak9 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you want to reduce domestic violence, focus on the main form and the main victims - violence against children. Most of that is perpetrated by women. Thus the need to focus on women as victims.

[–]dontpet 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I provide some care for male victims in my work and live in nz. I used to be sympathetic to this campaign but loathe it now that I've seen how men are treated by the systems here when they are the victim.

[–]Alkomb[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't be surprised. Feminists aren't smart.

[–]CharlieQuinn1979 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm Australian and in my local community we have lots of DV. Only it's not called that. It's referred to, in every awareness campaign in the area is "(Council) stands against family violence."

It's never been gendered in my shire and the support information always says stuff like "for women, men and children who have suffered family violence".

[–]unpicked-username -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Heh, im in NZ, and its almost the end of the day. (Its now 11pm)

I havent seen a single white ribbon today, I didnt know labour was trying to make a bew event today either

[–]the-tominator -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While the poster is good in being fair, the post isn't and the likely intention behind it (to play into fear/anger at men to get women and male-feminist votes) is not either.
