I don't understand this title.

Granted I'm a little drunk but I tried reading this article and don't understand anything

Same here, but I'm sober.

Thirding this, I can't make much sense of the article.

I think it's saying that men and women weight different things as being more or less important in a mate, and that the things men find important overlap with the things that women find important only 22% of the time. FYI data is from 1989. At any rate, not very surprising.

So there is a chance that the phrase "sweet mullet" might appear in the study?

Men and women look for different things in a mate, with just 22% overlap in preferences, a new study reports.

[–]Honeycone 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh okay. That's strange.

[–]Demonspawn 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is that strange?

It gauges overlap in sexual preferences between men and women. In layman's terms, what men look for in a partner vs what women look for in a partner.

Findings say there is only 22.8% overlap between what a woman looks for in a man and what a man looks for in a woman.

Since men and women are so different in what they look for in the other sex, scientists say that they can quite accurately predict (92.2%) the sex of a person solely based on their sexual preferences. However, five variables have no correlation with sex - pleasing disposition, sociability, similar religion, similar political views, mutual attraction.

Then goes on to say that sex is not a social construct like many LGBT activists allege. Society does not shape you into liking car or barbies, biology does.

Which is of course an awful argument because by the time you are looking for a romantic partner you have been socialized.

You do realize I don't take a stance on the issue, and that I was merely explaining, right? Even in the other post I made (to which you replied with the most obvious ad-hom fallacy), I was merely explaining and not taking a stance on the issue.

Is your brain mature enough to grasp the difference between an argument and a description at all? Or are you so daft that you can't make the difference between the two.

But thank you for following me and replying to a comment that is half a month old. One part creepy, one part flattering.

[–]copsarebastards 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't give a shit about your stance on anything. I explained why it was a bad argument, that doesn't necessitate that I think you support the argument. Is your brain mature enough to understand that? Obviously not.

Does anyone have access to the study?

[–]STEM_logic 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've seen a lot of studies that seem to show the opposite. In general I wouldn't trust people's self-reports of what they want in a partner as an accurate guide to what will actually generate the most attraction in real life.

Asking people what they find attractive is not very good at determining what they find attractive.
