Well, technically, feminism has the SCUM Manifesto. And prominent feminists have embraced this man-hating screed, or at least defended it.

More generally, feminism has patriarchy: the belief that society is designed to oppress women for the benefit of men, and that therefore all women are oppressed and no men are oppressed, and all men have a kind of privilege which has no female counterpart. It's not exactly a manifesto, but it might as well be.

I do not feel the need to disassociate myself from that term just because there are a dumb people that abuse the term.

Of course not. That would be... well, it would be letting the dumb people win. No one wants that.

You should dissociate yourself from feminism because feminism is fundamentally misandrist, and you don't want to give solidarity and support to bigots. You should dissociate yourself from feminism because you realize it is not possible to both support men's rights and support a movement which is opposed to the very idea of men's rights. You should dissociate yourself from feminism because the most effective criticism of feminism in modern times has come from women who have walked away.

If you are an egalitarian, you should start calling yourself one instead of labeling yourself a "feminist".

I totally hear what you're saying and in principle I agree. First, I've gone on the record that I don't hate feminists but I do hate particular feminist lead initiatives that have led the way to discrimination of men (someone below pointed this out as well: NOW (who claim women are superior parents over men and that men should not apply for parental status), VAWA that paints ALL men and ONLY men as perpetrators of DV, and those who hold fast to the patriarchal theory which is at most a nebulous attempt to infer a (undefined) problem exists with all men without evidence or proof - hence making it impossible to examine and ultimately fix.

So I am a feminist and an MRA but my brand of feminism is much closer aligned with someone like Christina Hoff Sommers someone who actually takes the time to look at the data. Ultimately, both her brand of feminism and MRAs want the same thing - true gender equality without exceptions.

Having said that I also believe that a lot of feminists don't know exactly what they are fighting for and are blindsided to the main stream medias dissemination of information. The media often looking to sell papers or get views online focus their aim on the worst issues or sometimes take the lightest issues (such as "ban bossy") and run fast with it ....really taking away discussion for more important issues. This (uninformed) group of feminists who I believe would very much be in tune with helping men and their issues would have nothing to do with the MRA. Why? Because of the mainstream media's attempt to brand MRAs as "pickup artists" or "misogynists", etc.... Since these feminists are not highly invested in studying the data closely and actually taking the time to read articles from the perspective of MRAs it is difficult to reach them.

Now, a very interesting point. About a month ago I published a study that showed that 60% of MRAs were at one time active feminists! The study also showed that 100% of those in support of men's rights (including a feminist) were in favor of true gender equality between the sexes. The reason this is important is because I've seen the trend whereby feminists have gone beyond the point of being spoon-fed from mass media and have actually gone to sites like AVFM and /r/mensrights and have actually found themselves wanting to do something about it.

My prediction, as more people become suspicious of "anti-male" propaganda they naturally are inquisitive and begin to read up on issues. Then many of them begin to align themselves with MRAs....yet many still hold fast to fighting for women's rights as well.

I dedicate myself to men's rights about 90% of the time, mostly because I believe wholeheartedly that its the menz that don't have a voice and are most likely to be marginalized. However, occasionally I see something that discriminates against women and I can't help but call it out as discrimination. An example, I recently saw a YouTube video that really objectified women; it was upbeat and to the untrained eye wouldn't appear to have been doing any harm...but I took the time to leave a comment saying it was objectifying women.

Hey OP, I like your spirit, amd I'll upvote you because of it. If feminism were as simple 'promoting equal rights in regards to women' it would be a fantastic thing and 95%+ of the western world would agree with it. When I see feminism I see hot topics like sexists shirt on scientist, rape culture, the patriarchy, women don't earn enough money, catcalling, manspreading, violence against women (and only women), anita sarkeesian, mansplaining. What annoys me the most is when a feminist claims to be fighting for gender equality but does not regard men's issues, unlike you are doing right now, OP. Many members in the MRM used to be feminist and ,upon realizing how one sided feminism views gender equality, left to find something more male-friendly.

Feminism has some very serious legitimate issues women face but instead the largest, loudest part of the movement attacks trivial bullshit and attacks men(or "patriarchy"). Right now a very small percentage of women identify as feminist because of this. Chistina H. Sommers suggests women should take back what feminism to it's former glory.

That's absurdly false. Have you actually bothered to read any of the many articles on India's rape problems posted here? Did you know that a man can be convicted of rape there even if the sex is consensual? Only men of course.

Hmm. I think that story is from the United Arab Emirates not Saudi Arabia. They are pretty close on the Sharia law stuff I think, and next door to each other but not the same country. It's mostly a language problem. There's only so many stories about rape from there and usually they only bother to cover such an issue in the English press to make fun of foreigners and say how horrid they are compared to us wonderful white civilized people.
