Some of Noiva de Cordeiro's women are already married and have families, but their husbands - and any sons over 18 - are made to work away from home and only allowed to return at the weekends.

This sounds like a cult.

And one of the first things they did was to dismantle the male-biased organised religion he had set up.

Rosalee Fernandes said: 'We have God in our hearts. But we don't think we need to go to church, get married in front of a priest or baptise our children. These are rules made up by men.'

There's a few things here that sound like good ideas. All of the sharing and communist ideas don't sound terrible on paper, and I'd be interested in seeing how it does in practice. Same with the religious setup.

But I'd love to know why religion is "male-biased", aside from some stupid bullshit about how women can't be priests and whatnot.

Well, what you're really looking at here is a bunch of women engaging in pet projects to keep themselves busy while the men are off doing the hard labor and sending the money home. Not entirely sure what makes it so different from anywhere else in the world in that respect.

I mean, clearly these women (at least the ones in the pictures) don't know anything about actual farming. I'm willing to bet that they couldn't install, maintain, or do the heavy labor required to operate any sort of sewage system. Nor did I see anything about who's building the homes, running the electrical grid, or running the fire department. I'm guessing that it's all because none of those things exist in this little femtopia.

On the other hand, maybe I'm wrong about all of it. If that's the case then good for them. I don't believe for a moment that any of these women are nearly as self-reliant as the article makes them out to be (and they pretty much admit to it in a roundabout way) but if they are well maybe we should try it too.

My guess is that it's the same as it always is. A lot of women are "independent" ...except for the money from the government, the ex, and extended family and can take care of themselves completely so long as nobody ever needs any heavy labor done.

I am curios what their rules are. Also why the heck would any guy get married so he can only see two days out of seven? That does not sound like wanting to be loved , that sounds like wanting a servant, "you work for 5 days, you get to see me for two.". Wasn't there something in feminism about how treating womens bodies as comodities was bad?

Because we have no electricity in our normal houses because.... no men? I got to ask who fixes the plumbing and sewers in this town. I get the feeling the answer is "nobody" because there isn't any.

I bet they let men in when they need the road fixed too.

Maybe it actually is good for them because they see themselves as the in group (Brazilian women, so no racism or sexism) and men as the out group. That doesn't mean it's a good thing though.

If you read the Spanish sites it is 40 women not 600.

Also the age profile of the women is all wrong. It is more of a commune. There are no children and it is a farm not a town!

It is a very exaggerated story.
