Here is one tip. Your lawyer is going to be as good as you are in this case. Follow these steps;

Don't waste anyone's time with your life story and how horrible you STBXW is. Stick to the facts. Get your W2's, your tax returns, and then any court documented evidence, like "here's my ex's DUI paperwork". Any lawyer would love to sit there and listen to their client ramble on and on for 3 hours and then bill them $350/hour minimum.
Your divorce is now only a financial matter. Leave the emotional baggage out of it.
Let the lawyer be honest with you about what the costs are and what your end results look like. If you're wanting full custody, let the lawyer tell you what your odds are in that. Take their advice.
Always deal with the lawyer's paralegal assistant over email only. Don't stop by and don't make long phone calls. Only ask closed ended simple questions.

Ask for referrals and actually speak to the ones he gives. Just like any other contractor for services. If they give you privacy BS, move on immediately. If they are really good, they should have no problem giving you a former/current to speak with.

I read a lot about "find the best lawyer you can". How do you know that who you got is the best? I have a referral from a friend..but his divorce is amicable.. and I suspect mine is going to be ugly. I want a shark, not a "give her everything and just accept it" sort of lawyer. Also want one that is going to truly look out for me..but not try to extend it and charge me 50K or more.. because I can't afford it.. and whatever we get in the end I certainly dont want half or more going to a lawyer.

Ask friends and family that have gone through the process. To me I treated my lawyer as the person who filed my paperwork and explained to me what was going on. I didn’t ask a lot of questions up front. That’s what the internet is for. I tried to be the most prepared person in the room when my case went to trial to the point of at end when it was clear I was probably going to get a favorable ruling the other attorney had an outburst where she said something like ‘well ‘isn’t that nice…. You seem to know everything…’ my reply while the master was tapping her gavel ‘nope just know who’s spent what over the past three years.’
