Forgiving someone is many times an act for yourself as it is for the other person. Through many years of recovery, it became clear early on that resentment is like taking poison to injure the other person. Or, "step 9", make ammends when doing so won't injure yourself or others. There are times where you have to reconcile the thing internally because attempting to bridge that gap directly just isn't the thing to do. Forgive, but don't forget. Learn from the experience so it doesn't happen again.

Yeah but when you get constant reminders every few days. Forgiveness takes a back seat.

I will never forgive nor forget. Aslong my memory holds up.

On a self directed level, my thought is, if God can forgive me for my mistakes, I can forgive myself for them as well. Helps me to get through the guilt of past behaviors that I hold myself accountable for.

Doesn’t mean I get a free pass to repeat the same mistakes though! To forgive yourself is to acknowledge that you were wrong, make adjustments for your path forward, and stay consistent.

I've liked: "I forgive like a bank forgives a line of credit: I close the account - I write off the balance and I never open another account for them."
