I’m really struggling with guilt right now and need some outside perspective. My marriage isn’t working—we’re both unhappy, and it’s been this way for a while. We have a 3-year-old son who means everything to me. My wife is a great mom and honestly a good person, but I just don’t feel happy in our relationship anymore. She thinks we should just suck it up and stay together for our son’s sake, but I honestly believe that staying in an unhappy marriage will just create a depressing environment for him. I want both of us to be happy, so our son can be happy too. But I can’t shake the guilt. My wife says I’m destroying our family, that I’m going to miss out on my son’s life, and that I’ll end up alone and miserable (I’m an immigrant here, so I have no family support). I’ve offered to pay double the legal child support and I want to be as involved as possible in my son’s life. I just don’t want to stay married to someone I’m not happy with. But her words get to me—am I a bad person for wanting this? Am I the AH for not just “sucking it up” and staying for my son? I don’t want to hurt anyone, but I also don’t want to live a lie or make our home a sad place for our child. Has anyone else been through this? Am I being selfish, or is it okay to want happiness for myself too? TL;DR: Unhappy in marriage, want a divorce, wife is a good person and mom. She says I’m ruining everything and will regret it. Am I a bad person or the AH for wanting out, even though we have a young son?
