Go to your county courthouse and sit on on divorce trials. Those are the attorneys you want to hire.

I think having as many consultations with as many lawyers as you can is a very good thing (if they are mostly free). I went to 5 before I chose the guy that I liked the most. Have your important questions ready and obviously read any reviews you can. Unfortunately I don't think there is a specific formula here. You gotta go with your gut, and having consultations with as many as you can will help your gut with that feeling.

Choosing a lawyer depends on three main factors:

Your budget.
Your spouse's behavior.
Your goals.

From what you've posted, we only know your goals. Which seem reasonable in that you realize you're going to have to pay something.

What we don't know is:

Whether you will file or she will file or she has already filed.
Whether you both want the divorce or whether one of you does not.
The basic size and nature of the marital estate. (i.e. is there enough to divide)

If you're driving the divorce and she doesn't want it, just be prepared for a scorched earth policy and the lawyer she chooses will drive that and play into her emotions. If you can control your lawyer, then the amounts of fees you will pay may be reduced. You also may be ordered to pay her fees.

So the lawyer you choose is only half of it.

In most situations, what you want is a lawyer who is capable of taking the case to trial but is seeking settlement opportunities. Again, if she doesn't want the divorce - be prepared to throw a ton of cash away.

IMHO, mediation is ideal if STBX is reasonable and isn’t bitter! Lawyers are, by nature, going to cause escalation. It’s a tough one, just pick the one that has the most approachable personality, is likable and communicates well (replies fast) and doesn’t charge travel fees (unless they charge a fixed $ amount for a visit to the courthouse). IMHO, I don’t mind paying them for their time when they are using their brains and education to solve my case but I hate the thought that I have to pay someone to travel (and them potentially sitting in idle traffic and running my meter).

Some jobs have HR benefits with free consultations and discounts. Try to do mediation and also have your private attorney look over any agreements.

Use mediation, do not go to court!! Court and lawyers will cost you the big bucks. Mediation is designed to benefit all involved. "What blesses one, blesses all" - mediation uses one lawyer or one (small) team of lawyers to find solutions that work for everybody. If you end up in court you'll regret the outcome. If you go the mediation route, you'll both have a voice in the outcome.
