I've been living for years in terror that my wife will divorce me and take my son away. I recently found out that in my state the default (absent abuse, etc.) is joint legal and physical custody, which I'm told means she'd get the week, and I'd get the weekend, plus one weekday night. This is astronomically more time with my son than I thought I'd get.
It's so much better, in fact, that I don't really trust that it's true. It would mean I could live alone, walking distance away, and have more 1-on-1 time with him than I ever get now. And in a few years, he could come live with me if he wants, and we'd be free.
Learning this has completely changed my outlook, and my terror has lifted just like that. Now that I'm not afraid, I see how many of my behaviors were driven by fear: I don't argue anymore, I don't apologize any more, her words just don't even touch me. It's like I'm fine with the status quo, and I'm fine if we divorce, and can just live my life with my son no matter what she decides to do.
Am I fooling myself?
