I divorced a few years ago and have shared custody of my 8 year old son.
For his 4th birthday we had a joint party. Things were still somewhat civil, not anymore.
Then COVID hit so no birthdays until last year, which was on his mom time so she organized it.
This year he said he wanted to have it at my house (bigger than his mom's apartment she shares with her boyfriend and his 2 daughters). He wouldn't want it anywhere else.
I emailed his mom and she said she was ok with it to much of my surprise.
But... She didn't disappoint me. I got an email the other day saying that we need to alternate birthdays and she's taking me to court mandated mediation.
My take is just to let him do whatever he wants. He's not 4 anymore.
Soon enough he'll ask me for $50 so he can go with his friends to play laser tag or whatever kids do these days for birthdays.
