Which state you live in plays the most important part, most are pretty consistent with California, Texas, and Florida being the outliers. In California couple don’t even have to be married for alimony to be awarded and I believe it has the most lenient guidelines for the length it should be paid. Texas and Florida have a set time for alimony, meaning they don’t award for it indefinitely. There might be a few other states that follow similar guidelines but for the most part the factors that are considered are the length of the marriage, education levels before marriage, income history before and during marriage, and ability to work. In your case she’s already working so that can be considered her earning potential. In comparison to if she never worked during the marriage you’d have to get something like a vocational evaluation done to determine how much she should be able to earn or even prove that she can work.
